This was a really good Nodate episode, the best yet I think, and I loved everything about Nodate and Eriko in it.

I’ve been going through a bit of a drama slump. I watched the first two episode of Lie to Me and was meh. I started the first episodes of both Queen of Reversals and Jade Palace Lock Heart but didn’t even finish them. So I decided to try a Japanese series and ended up watching all of Mei-chan no Shitsuji in a couple days.

It’s a very cute, if also silly, series. The concept – heiresses who go to a private school and have their own butlers who are completely devoted to them – is pretty cracky, and if the genders were reversed I think it would have bothered me so much I wouldn’t have watched but as it was it didn’t actually bother me. I liked all the characters and thought this show had a very good supporting cast. Azumi was one of my favourite characters, Rika and Miruku were great as well, and I shipped Fujiko/Nezu and Rika/Aoyama. In fact I think the supporting cast was one of the highlights of the series.

I liked the Mei/Rihito relationship a lot as well. One issue I did have with both Mei and Rihito was Read more... )

I was planning on reading the manga until I read that Mei is 12. And Rihito is 21. And there is still romance between them? Umm. No thanks. That age difference, specifically how young she is, is too much for me.

At the beginning of the week I was trying to decide what drama to start and had settled on Myung Wol, despite the fact that it wasn't finished airing yet (something I don't do), because I kept reading so much gushing over it. Of course just as I was deciding that the whole situation with lead actress Han Ye Seul blew up and the drama's fate became uncertain.

So instead I decided to watch Love Shuffle. I really enjoyed it. I wasn’t sold with the first episode but the more I watched the more I liked it. By the final episode I loved all the characters and the relationships and it'd had me in tears several times. I would definitely recommend it.

Yay Panda!

Also I am completely obsessed with this song. I have listened to it so many times this week. It kind of reminds me of ABBA.

I watched the entire series and really enjoyed it. I love main character Toma and really liked the Toma/Segumi partnership. The build up of the mystery was excellent and the final episodes had several awesome twists. The truth about Ninomae and the identity of the true bad guy I didn’t see coming at all, and the final big confrontation was awesome. I am so glad that this show is getting an SP and a movie because with the way it ended it would be so wrong for it not to.

Toma is awesome. She’s my favourite. She is so smart it’s scary. She is brilliant and perceptive, unwavering in her pursuit of solving a crime and very competent. She is also really amusing to watch because along with all that she is also so weird and sometimes ridiculous and just doesn’t care at all. She is herself and if you don’t like it that’s your problem. I love the faces she makes. She has some of the best smirks I’ve ever seen. I love her smiles too and how she uses them as yet another tool at her disposal. I love how dramatic she gets when she’s figured out the truth and is laying it out for the bad guy. In episode 7 her Read more... )

Throughout the series I kept thinking about how I really wanted Toma Saya and Osawa Eriko to meet. They could solve crimes together and it would be epic! Then when I was looking up a name I had a ‘duh!’ moment when I finally realised that Toma was played by Toda Erika – who played Mami on BOSS!

Some thoughts on an individual episode basis. Spoilers for the entire series. If you haven’t watched the series yet I suggest you do so before reading further because some of the twists really should be discovered for yourself. It’s only ten episodes and worth watching. )

Koshonin Season 1

I finished the first season and enjoyed it overall. I really did not think I would finish it because that first episode was just so hard for me to get through. I kept procrastinating on watching episode two but a number of people loved the series so much that I didn’t want to just drop it. I decided to give it the second episode, and the conclusion of the episode 1 plot line, to see if I could keep watching. Luckily, I found that episode much easier to get through and subsequently the rest of the episodes as well. While I wouldn’t list it as a favourite series I did enjoy it enough that I’m going to watch the second season.

I liked it but it did take me a couple episodes to get into. If it had been one of the longer series I think I might have ended up stalling on it. I’m really glad I finished it though because the overarching mystery was actually really good and I loved the reveal at the end. This series is definitely worth watching unspoiled.

The amazing thing about Eriko is that she doesn’t let her pride get in the way of anything, let alone doing her job. She lets people think what they want of her – like her male boss/other division heads thinking and basically saying that she’s incompetent, suspects thinking she’s stupid and being snide or superior towards her – and she lets people think, or even purposefully comes off as, less smart then she is. She just doesn’t care what people think of her. And then in the end she gets the bad guy/solves the crime/proves that she is in fact smarter and better than everyone else. I love that about her.

This was a fun episode in an intense way.
