Spring Comes Again, Flowers Bloom Again

This was a very low-key final. It was not at all what I was expecting and while I enjoyed it I was also a bit disappointed in it.

My biggest issue with watching Asian dramas is, by far, names. This is in large part why I’m hesitant to watch several Asian dramas concurrently instead of my current method of marathoning one series even though I think it might be better. There are actually two parts that work together to make things difficult for me.

1) Dramas just don’t give names sometimes. Often with background tertiary characters but also with secondary characters as well – you don’t get a name for them either for a couple episodes or at all. It’s very frustrating especially since there isn’t the same amount of English language resources for Asian dramas so I can’t even look it up. Dal Ja’s Spring was horrible about this. I just realised that in my previous posts I took to calling Ki Joong’s crazy ex-wife ‘Mrs. Eom’ because she hasn’t been given a name! This is of course wrong, wrong, wrong because South Korean women don’t take their husband’s name when they get married. Sigh.

2) Then there is spelling which is such a pain in the ass. There always seems to be a couple different spellings for names and it’s so hard to know which to use. In DJS I don’t know if it’s Gi Joong or Ki Joong and I think I’ve done it both ways.

Earnest Things You Need to Throw Away When You Love part 2

I loved that the show played a Sailor Moon theme (it’s the Serenity/Endymion one right? God, I can’t even remember) at the beginning of this episode’s preview/recap. It made me ridiculously happy.

There Needs To Be Loyalty In Love!

I loved this episode. I think I definitely need a bit of a break from the series because I was starting to get worn down watching it all back-to-back and it feels like I was more able to enjoy this episode then the previous couple. Or this episode could just be better than the previous few.

Love Drenches My Heart, Like Spring Showers!

This episode felt a bit weird. It just didn’t play out in any way I was expecting it too. I was really shocked that Read more... )

I think I’d forgotten how much this show is about women. There are six ‘main’ ones – Dal Ja, Seon Joo, grandma, mom, Ms. Kang and Soon Ae – and then several more in limited reoccurring supporting roles (Tae Bong’s mom, the other office girls, Ms. Eom, new additions Ji Hee and Hee Yeon). It’s just really great.

After all the angst of IRIS it was nice to get back to the fun of this series. I’d actually forgotten how much I enjoy it.

This episode went in a different direction then I was expecting and had a different tone from what we’ve seen previously.

A serious issue I am having with this series is that I’m finding it so difficult to find the names of various characters. Not only isn’t it always clear in the show, or I miss it, but unlike other series I’ve watched no site I’ve found thus far has a complete cast list so I can’t even look it up. It is very annoying! I mean I thought Dal Ja’s married friend was named Soo Ji but apparently her name is Go Shil Jang. WTH? Then who is Soo Ji? What are Dal Ja’s mother and grandmother’s names, or what about Tae Bong’s family or best friend? I also don’t know what Ki Joong’s wife’s name was. It is just very annoying.

Episode 2 ‘Can Love Be Hired?’

So I wasn’t sold on this show after the first episode. There were things I liked but it also kept hitting my embarrassment squick and it just didn’t click with me. However, I loved this episode. It still hit my embarrassment squick on occasion but it also made me laugh, I loved what they did with Dal Ja’s relationships with Seon Joo, Sae Do and Tae Bong, and there were several moments dealing with gender I loved. So, I’m sold on the series now.

Episode 3 ‘A Romantic Inquiry Into a Fateful Encounter’

Ack, this episode was actually worse than the first one as far as embarrassing goes. I ended up fast-forwarding through much of it.
