The Good Dinosaur and The Purge Anarchy
The Good Dinosaur
I was rather meh the first time I watched, though to be fair I only caught parts of it. Having now seen it a dozen times I like it more. I still think it’s one of the weakest Pixar movies I’ve seen.
+ My favourite moment was the ‘shark’ fin in the clouds scene. Having the pterodactyls flying through the clouds like water, unseen except for an ominous fin, was genius. Loved it.
+ I really appreciated that the T-Rex’s weren’t the bad guys in this. I thought them as ranchers with their herd of buffalo as a solution was pretty clever.
+ I’m annoyed that once again it’s the father who’s more important to the story/main character, even though this time he was the one who died.
+ The humans were interesting. Simultaneously a dog equivalent and with closer to human intelligence [understanding –‘ stick mourning, wearing clothing] but I’m not sure it entirely worked for me.
The Purge 2: Anarchy
I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting.
+ I liked the characters. I liked the bond that Leo and Cali, and Eva, created and how it ended with them heading to the hospital together. I found the hand-grasp touching. I like to think (and want fic) where they create a new family together, and using the 100k that Eva's dad got for them with his death, they start a new life together.
+ I liked that the reactions of all three women were different. I liked that Eva was so consistently paralyzed by her fear but then at the end took charge to save Leo.
+ With Liz, I love that she was fighting and her using the gun successfully, but in the tunnel I wish she'd kept shooting instead of stopping when Shane is shot and having to be told to keep shooting, but that's a small thing.
+ I liked that Leo didn't kill Warren and that ended up saving his life when Warren shot Big Daddy.
+ I hated that Leo was violent with Warren's wife (grabbing her hair, threatening her) when there was no indication that she was involved in his son's death. It was very unnecessary, a sort of unthinking misogyny, that didn't really fit with what we'd seen of him before.
+ I didn't like that the anti-purge group stormed in all 'kill the oppressors' (basically) but then seemed to only kill the help while all the rich people who were actually behind the human hunting got away.
But yeah, overall I liked it!
