Wu Assassins
I liked it okay. In the end I did want to watch more so there's that. I'll be watching the movie.
Kai/Uncle Six were great. I'm glad that they did manage to work through at least a little of the issues between them and that Kai didn't end up killing Uncle Six. It might have been fun to see those two as actually enemies but I'm glad that Uncle Six's love for Kai was real and true, and he chose Kai. I also love that him giving up the Fire Wu was all about protecting Kai but not actually him wanting/planning on dropping the Triad/rest of his life choices. I loved Kai hugging Uncle Six and calling him father during the Gu ritual. I loved him thanking Lu Xin for not killing him.
I loved Kai having, and finally cooking?? with, the knife his dad gave him. It was sad and sweet and bittersweet and kind of dark. But also very unhygienic. All I could think of was: you're not really cooking with that knife, right Kai? Please tell me you're not cooking with the knife you've used to kill people, Kai! Oh, also I love that when Kai does kill he does it with the knife that Uncle Six bought him. There's something about that that works perfectly for me.
I loved that moment after Kai leaves the Earth Wu's house and he pauses to steal himself for what he's going to find when he gets back to Uncle Six, and then that moment when he comes out of the fog to find Lu Xin and Uncle Six with his face covered in the blood of the man he murdered.
So the turning point in their relationship was when Kai was being forced to shoot the tied up man and Uncle Six did it instead, right? Because damn, Uncle Six did that for him.
I really loved Kai and Lu Xin's reactions to Uncle Six's murder. I loved the shared grief and rage. And them planning to get vengeance together.
I actually wanted more of Lu Xin/Uncle Six's relationship. I wish we'd gotten more scenes between them before the reveal about the fire because it would have made that reveal hit even harder. Lu Xin was so betrayed when he learned the truth, which was a good indication of how much he idolised Uncle Six, and Uncle Six was so understanding of that rage (to the point he was going to let Lu Xin kill him) that it indicates his guilt over it was still very much there. Their relationship is interesting!
Also very interesting to me, and an opportunity that wasn't completely capitalised on, was the relationships between Uncle Six, Kai and Lu Xin. Lu Xin idolises and works for Uncle Six, Kai hates (but not really) his father and rejects his life and Lu Xin and Kai are best friends. Lu Xin and Kai seem to have a really good handle on the situation but has it caused serious tension? Has Uncle Six ever tried to leverage their friendship to mend his relationship with Kai? At the end it's implied that Lu Xin could take over in Uncle Six's absence - what does he think about that and what does Kai? I feel like there are so many complicated emotions under pining these relationships that I would love to see explored more.
I loved the friendship between Kai and Lu Xin and the loyalty and devotion between them. They were great.
The friendships between Kai/Lu Xin/Tommy/Jenny were great. I really liked the rock solid loyalty to each other.
I liked CG. I loved her and Lu Xin bonding and flirting. Loved her stealing his car at the end. I loved her and Kai's quick loyalty. The vision where she saves him and then how that actually played out in reality was great.
I loved CG and Jenny taking down Zan.
Zan was amazing. I wanted more of her. I loved how scary she was and how amazing a fighter she was. Jenny might not have been sympathetic to her but I was. It struck me how similar her past seemed to Kai and I wonder if she was a little jealous there. That despite her loyalty she would never get half of the interest/love/respect Uncle Six had for Kai. I wish we could have seen her vs Kai a bit more (though I guess that was coming in season 2.)
Zan story felt stereotypical - loyal henchman who the boss doesn't care about strikes out in anger/to get her own power - but honestly Uncle Six was an arrogant ass to her and his condescension earned that betrayal. Uncle Six is a smart guy so I have no idea what he was thinking. I was cheering for her after that (though not so much his death. Too far Zan, too far. Especially since she wasn't a main character and thus her feelings about killing Uncle Six who she had been fanatically loyal to for years wasn't explored.) I was sad about how it ended up because I love loyal henchmen, and I wanted her to keep being loyal and for him to be loyal back and would have loved if the show had gone in that direction far more. Alas.
Lu Xin having issues about his burns is certainly understandable but him considering himself a monster makes me roll my eyes a little. The burns on his back and arm don't appear to affect him health-wise or interfere with movement or cause him pain so it seems to be mostly an aesthetic issue? People can have issues with their looks for anything big and small but... dude is hot! He is really attractive. His angst over it would have had a lot more weight if it had actually seriously affected him. Caused health problems or made him unable to fight or caused a serious disfigurement (maybe burned his face.)
'Uncle Six Lives' hmm. I really hope this means he will be coming back. With all the time-travel and mystical nonsense on this show it will be completely believable. I wonder who painted that - was it Lu Xin or Kai, or a random Triad follower?
Jenny is scary. She apparently didn't even hesitate over burning those two minions up when I honestly don't think it was necessary.
Tommy seems like a really good guy at heart but everything conspires to go wrong. I kind of love that Kai gives him the Wood Wu, he gets to be an actual superhero!, and it lasts for a couple minutes wherein he doesn't actually get to use his abilities. Poor Tommy. I'm glad that the reveal that he didn't screw up at the fire seems to have been enough to push him out of his repreating downward spiral and that he ended the series in a good place.
I loved the scene where Tommy defended Jenny to their parents. Tommy/Jenny overall had a really wonderful relationship and I enjoyed them a lot. I loved her beating up drug dealers to save him, I loved their talk near the end while she was cradling him in the forest.
I liked the conversation between Jenny and Lu Xin where she reveals she took Uncle Six's help because she wanted the business to fail and for her to lose it.
Zan got the Triad to turn against Uncle Six far too easily even though it was all off-screen. Maybe especially because it was off-screen. I wish that it had been more like those men were Zan's and it was an ambush, not that everyone turned on Uncle Six.
When Mr. Young approached Jenny about Kai I found it suspicious but then when he showed up at the end looking at the four of them and remembering them as teenagers I suddenly found myself thinking: he's Kai's bio-father isn't he? I'm not sure if that works at all but it would be an interesting twist. I liked his relationship with Kai.
Did Fletcher survivor his possession? The show doesn't really make it clear.
