Wonder Woman 1984
It was okay but disappointing. It could have been so much better.
+ The biggest issue, imo, was the choice to bring Steve back. It was a bad one. It seemed like Diana repeating a lesson she'd already learned, it felt kind of undermining of her, and the whole choice to have Steve possessing some poor dude's body (and then them having sex in it!) was terrible all around.
- I hated the movie had Diana refusing to let go of Steve and having to be pushed into it by Steve and the world literally ending.
- I hated Diana saying she'd never love again.
- Having Diana, decades later, being so hung up on Steve that she hasn't moved on and he is the only thing she would want to wish for left me very meh. She is obviously very lonely but why Steve instead of longing for her family, her people, her home instead? Say she wishes for that and then we get Antiope and Diana wondering how and then a portal to Themyscira opens and she's reunited with Hippolyta and her people but also this goes very wrong in obvious ways.
- Having Steve so involved is fine but having him continually saving Diana ended up annoying me. This is possibly a me issue but all I could think was of how if he wasn't there we'd get to see Diana doing it herself and how much better that would have been.
Just - all around I did not like Steve being in the movie. I think the choice weakened it and I wish I could have seen the movie we'd have got if they left him out.
+ There was no reason for Steve to be possessing another man's body. It's magic. Just say it's magic, no further explanation needed.
+ Having just said that I disliked Steve being in the movie those few scenes we saw of him reacting to the future were fun. I loved the clothing montage. I liked Steve and Diana's initial reunion and they continue to be pretty sweet. I loved his reaction when he learns about radar and Diana's facepalm.
+ Diana/Barbara were really under-developed which was annoying because I wanted more of them. I was deeply annoyed when we cut to them at dinner with Diana laughing and saying how she hasn't laughed like that in a long time but then we don't see why she's laughing. In fact in none of their subsequent conversations do we get a moment like that again. It was a very tell-don't-show short-hand with the writers/director seemingly not caring to actually make the relationship matter. It's a shame because what we did get I liked.
Imagine if Diana and Barbara were actual friends before this all started going down? (And we get to see it.) Or hell if they need a romance why not make Barbara Diana's new love interest? And then it all goes wrong with the wish. That can be the personal stake Diana has in this. It would have given their scenes a lot more weight.
+ I love how Barbara is so dazzled by Diana that she asks her out the first time she meets her. I also liked her doing the research Diana needed even though she was already losing her kindness by that time.
+ The golden armour of Artesia ended up being kind of pointless, huh. Mostly there for the visual I guess? It is very cool looking, I loved the wings, but I wish it had had an actual purpose. Using it giving Diana the ability to fly, for example. Or have her bring it out when she's still weak and losing her powers to give herself a necessary power-up.
+ I liked the story of Artesia itself and the little coda at the end with her. I loved Lynda Carter playing her.
+ I was super not a fan of how Barbara's big moment where you see how things are going bad with her is when she - beats the crap out of the man who attacked her and was going to do it again. Uh. I mean, sure she went overboard. But also - he sexually harassed her then attacked her and got thrown into a vehicle and then days later, having apparently learned nothing, was going to do it again. Yes, her relishing in the violence itself is obviously a bad sign but I wish the movie had decided to show it in a different way.
+ The fight scenes were okay/good but I didn't love any of them.
+ I loved the flashback to Themyscira.
+ Gal Gadot, and thus Diana, continues to be amazingly beautiful. Just stunning.
+ I liked the the jet sequence and how Diana made it invisible.
+ I appreciate that the movie tried to do something different in the last act and with the final showdown but I don't know how well it actually worked.
