The Girl From the Well
Nov. 25th, 2023 01:43 pmI liked it.
+ I liked Okiku and felt for her.
+ Callie was appalled by what Okiku is and does but I'm with Tark in that there is definitely something almost satisfying in her murdering murderers and freeing their victims to the afterlife.
+ Callie did something really stupid in not telling the mikos that it was her blood that broke one of the seals. She protests that she "didn't know" (what could happen) which true enough but she also didn't volunteer the information to find out. She's been worried about it almost from the beginning, and had the sense that the black ghost was going to kill her because of it. It seems like common sense to give the mikos all relevant information! So not malicious just stupid and frustrating to read and it led directly to Machiko and Amaya's deaths and the (maybe temporary) closing of the Chinsei shine (likely leading to deaths via their inability to trap harmful spirits.) It was the most frustrating and annoying part of the book.
+ But on the other had Callie then was so smart when in the midst of the destruction/murder ghost/painful injuries when she thought to weaponize Okiku's enraged destructive aversion to Nine. That was awesome! I appreciated her not hesitating, taking the first opportunity to enact it and doing so even while injured.
