Having finished the show it was okay. Not great, not terrible. In the end it kind of just was.
The two biggest issues were
a) that the short season forced them to cut out so much stuff from the first season, to move events and characters around. Some of this worked fine but you certainly felt the time crunch.
b) the characterisation. Yeah the lack of episodes very much didn't help but even beyond that there were issues. Mostly with the writing though I wouldn't say the acting was amazing either. The characters didn't feel super like themselves sadly.
Katara bothered me so much. She felt so flattened as a character. Her drive and her anger felt muted or even not much there. So diasppointing.
By having so few episodes it needed to be concetrated on plot which means we got a much more serious Aang and his fun loving side was not much there.
Sokka by removing his sexism got hurt as a character because it removed a significant bit of character growth he went through and also left him feeling more flattened.
Katara learned her waterbending way too easily and were was Aang learning?
+ Momo saving the little girl was very uhhh huhhhh moment for me.
+ Just think of how much more weight it would have had if Sokka had started the series trying to force Katara to stay out of fights and looking down on her abilities because he didn't think girls could fight and ending it with their talk in the finale.
+ Yue meeting Sokka in the spirit realm was actaully a brilliant idea. I love everything about it. Her whole moon connection already gives her a tie to the spirit realm so to extend it this far isn't that unbelievable. By doing this they also make their instant crush on each other have a lot more meaningful. Frankly they should have gone further with it.
+ I wasn't a fan of Zuko getting his crew's respect/understanding because Iroh told them the truth about his past. MeH.
+ I loved the look of Ocean-possessed Aang. That all looked great.
+ I really liked the look of June.
