Dead Boy Detectives
Jun. 24th, 2024 11:29 pmI enjoyed it.
I liked the end with The Principal being so impressed with the work they were doing that she decided to leavve them to it and loved her making the Night Nurse their superviser.
I loved Edwin and Charles deep bond and devotion to each other. The unshakable loyalty between them, the way they take care of each other. I loved Edwin's confession scene. The timing wasn't great but Charles telling him that while he 'can't say he's in love with him' Edwin is the most important person in his life and they have an eternity together to figure it out. I like how it's left open. I love that the confession really doesn't change anything in Charles regard for Edwin or how he behaves with him. Also Edwin's pining was very enjoyable.
I liked the reveal that Crystal actually was a genuinely terrible person. Sure, she had reasons (poor little rich girl, emotionally neglected) but that doesn't excuse her. At the same time without her past baggage we got to see who Crystal was at her core which is a caring person who wants to help others.
I loved Niko. I was so happy when she was told the truth, became friends with the others and joined in with some of their investigations. She's such a sweet and generous person. Adorable. I really liked her loyalty and determination to help, as well as her optimistic personality.
I was upset when Niko died and I refuse to believe she's really gone. That person at the end with the sprites was 100% her right? Okay, the Night Nurse said people can only come back as zombies but she doesn't know everything.
I had a bit too much whiplash in a couple of the wrap up scenes simply because they felt too light with Nico's death only a day or two passed.
I really enjoyed Esther as the villain. I loved her sense of style and her attitude. I thought she was fun. Also I enjoyed the way Crystal finally defeated her. It made sense.
I loved that Crystal took care of David herself with her own power. And okay a little help from her ancestors. I like that even though her parents are neglectful and terrible she now has other family to fall back on, who will have her back.
I hadn't realised that this was in the same universe as The Sandman so it was a wonderful surprised when Death showed up. I also liked Despair's creepy appearance.
I liked how quickly Edwin and Nico bonded. They were adorable together.
Poor Monty. I liked him. Him going for the kiss was sweet actually and then Edwin being honest and the crushimg awkwardness was very relatable. The spying for a witch and luring them into a trap, maybe less so and not great. But also he's a crow, acting as a first time human, who has been the long time familiar of a witch. It wasn't his fault! Emotions are hard! I really wanted the boys to bring him home with them. He got redemption! Give him a nice family that he deserves. He can be their familiar! Honestly I am going to be upset about it if he isn't there next season.
The Night Nurse getting trapped in the sea creature did a really good job at making me like her. She's trying her best! She might be a little rules bound and rigid but she's not actually a cruel person. I loved how appalled she was by the potential mistake in Edwin's paperwork and that she was willing to rethink her position.
I loved that Nico decided to keep the Sprites instead of burying them. Their meanness was honestly pretty funny. I didn't love them turning their cruelty on Nico's weaknesses but she seemed to mostly be abe to deal with them well. I love the idea of them growing to like/be protective of her and becoming her minions.
Jenny was great. I really loved her following Crystal to meet her ex and how she got between them when David got in Crystal's face.
I liked Tragic Mike and I was honestly expecting him to become one of their cases. I want him to find a way to be a walrus again. I wonder if he dies would his ghost be a walrus, and then he'd be allowed to return to the sea and his family?
Edwin's hell torture was disturbing. The death hide-and-seek game didn't seem that fun and the weird spider-like dollhead creature was creepy.
Simon handled his crush on Edwin terribly but yeah a century of torture is probably enough for a badly done prank by someone whohadn't realised they were living in a supernatural universe. Even if it was a very minor seeming torture. I really liked Edwin and Simon making peace, both with each other but also finally finding forgiveness in themselves. I hope Edwin learns someday that Simon managed his way out of hell.
Jenny and Maxine's date really did not go how I was expecting but I enjoyed the twist all the same.
I was really glad that the truth about Shelby wasn't that she was raped but rather that she was drugged with GHB leading her losing her scholarship. It's so easy and common to add rape in a backstory to give a 'reason' for angst but there are a lot of ways to do that without rape. What they did to her was fucking terrible and it can be that without the need to add the sexual element.
This line was great: "I lost my powers using a glass heart to stop a demon from possessing me but it broke and now I'm powerless and a giant mushroom is going to eat my ghost friends."
The opening scene had very unneccessary exposition that could have fairly easily been worked into the dialogue in a much more natural way which made me immediately skeptical about the writing but it got better after.
I'm confused about why they didn't go back to the little girl to discover who Crystal was. She's the one who hired them to help Crystal! If they were friends she should surely know who Crystal is and yet she's never brought up again. This is even more weird because they often check in with their clients after the case is done and in that case it's the ghost girl not Crystal. Granted knowing how Crystal was in the past the little girl's take on their relationship is suspicious. I think either she lied about what they did together (and is a lot more malevolent then she seemed) or she was lying about why she wanted them to save Crystal.
