Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Sep. 27th, 2024 10:58 pmI liked it.
I liked what it did with the characters overall.
Beetlejuice was as fun as always. I enjoyed basically everything with him. Lots of laughs. His backstory reveal was perfect. I think he was used very well in the story.
Delia was maybe a little too over the top at points even for her dramatic personality but overall she was great. I loved her reactions to Rory. How completely disbelieving and *done* she was with him and the situation was hilarious. One of my favourite parts of the movie. I enjoyed her death and thought it felt fitting.
I liked Lydia and Delia, and where their relationship had evolved to.
 Lydia was okay
 I liked Astrid fine.
I liked how they incorporated Charles, his death and subsequent afterlife without involving the actor. It was fun.
I clocked Jeremy being a ghost immediately but him being a killer was a surprise. I liked how that plot with him and Astrid played out. The Beetlejuice stamp reveal was great.
Bob was delightful and I'm very sad he died!
Delores was great. I loved her whole look too. The scene where she put herself together was one of my favourites.
Delores was in the movie a lot less then I was expecting and really didn't play much a role in anything which was a disappointment. She wasn't used to her full potential.
I liked that the sandworm looked the same as in the original rather then trying to make it look updated.
The end was pretty weak. Especially in how they dealt with Beetlejuice. I honestly didn't like that. It felt too easy and like the writers gave up.
But also the fake out with Lydia's dream. Getting to see her moving on, or maybe her and Astrid working together with their ghost seeing abilities would have been a nicer denouement.
That one mention that Lydia's mom hadn't died made me go hmmm because apparently seeing ghosts runs in the family. It makes me wonder if she could show up in a potential sequel.
I wish that since Astrid's knowledge of the book was so integral to the end that we'd seen more of her researching it.
Uh, doesn't Richard working in the afterlife means he committed suicide??
The whole Richard plot was fine as a reason for the distance between Lydia and Astrid but once he showed up it felt... idk, off in some way. I think perhaps because there was so much happening he ended up not being important and wasn't given the time he should have considering his importance to the main characters, which then led to his appearance feeling a bit like a let down.
The initial Beetlejuice scene should have had Lydia say his name immediately upon getting shrunk into the model, then a third time when she unsealed her lips.
