It was really lovely.
It was a beautiful looking movie.
The animals were all very engaging. I really enjoyed watching them interact - from initial distrust to final found family. I love how expressive they were. I loved them working together to save Capybara. I was invested in them.
I loved Cat starting the movie looking at herself alone in the water (stuck in the past) and then at the end Cat looks at herself in the water, surrounded by her new family.
I love the choice in animals and the variety but at the same time these animals all come from very different parts of the world! How did they end up in the same general area?
Then there is the friendly whale creature. It could have easily been made to be a normal whale but it was definitely not. So - new species of whale that has evolved? A mutated whale? I loved it's friendliness and how it kept protecting Cat.
Poor Whale creature :( I appreciate Cat going and trying to comfort it. And hey, there were some hints that the flood was returning so maybe it survived, who knows.
Honestly so intrigued by the world-building and wanted to know more. It's clear there was human civilization though most of the bigger structures/cities looked really old and long abandoned, and were also very variable in style (Venice and Dutch-looking Windmills and Tibetan monasteries, and strange symmetrical pillars.) The mix in styles reminds of the mix in animal variety.
But despite all the things left behind we see no sign of actual humans. Cat's human home was fairly recently occupied (considering the paper drawing and in general the condition of the place). Clearly Cat's human hasn't be gone too long - so where did they go? They were right in the middle of various cat statues too. Did they die? Did they get sucked up in the swirling light portal? I have a hard time believing they'd have simply abandoned Cat who they clearly loved.
Also just what happened to this world? Obviously something huge and destructive happened - is the flood a reoccurring thing? Was it the portal?
What the heck was that gravity defying portal? Did it cause the water to recede? (Correlation is not causation but it is worth considering.) Did the portals somehow cause the flood?
Another world-building point - the animals are clearly a lot smarter then their current counterparts, while still being very much animals. The fact alone that they can steer a boat shows it. I liked it.
I loved that there was no dialogue. I think that was a great choice.
