12 Monkeys 4x10 & 4x11 Thoughts
Aug. 14th, 2025 10:37 pmThe Beginning
+ I was so happy when the show started with Athan visiting his grandmother at the very start of Project Splinter. As a primary he had to know the truth about her right? Their entire talk was lovely and I liked him commiserating and understand why she had to try no matter what to save Hannah. (He really is like her!). But I loved best was that Athan made this trip specifically to try and save his father. "Consider this then - no matter what, save the one." I love that in the end Katarina remembered this, and as she always is she didn't give up, she saved Cole.
+ I loved that it was Cole and Katarina at the end of it. I loved them taking the time to have a final moment together. I loved her thanking him for keeping his promise. "I don't think I ever told you what you mean to me. I, ah, I had two mothers. I'm glad that you're here with me at the end." ♥ Beautiful and bittersweet and sad, and Katarina dying with a smile on her face. I'm glad she got to hear what she meant to him. I'm sad for him that he lost his mother and was left alone at the very end.
+ The Annapurna remains were Olivia! Her skeleton, her dormant virus, sent back to 894 after being killed by a time beam. "I was a thing in a box" they told us so long ago! I love it. Also I'm just very happy it wasn't Cole cause that what I thought.
+ Cole taking a moment to collect himself and then immediately just accepting it and moving forward with the idea of un-existing himself was very him. Of course he'd take it that easy.
+ Cassie's reaction was brilliant honestly. I loved her whole breakdown. I loved angrily stating she just murdered 7 billion and then following it up with saying that Cole was worth all of them. I loved her anger at the unfairness of it and refusal to accept. I loved her furiously telling Cole that "you are owed! I am owed" Excellent performance by Amanda Shull.
+ We kept not getting any last hugs - no Ramse/Cole, no Jennifer/Cole or Jennifer/Cassie, no Katarina/Cole - and I was very disappointed by it! I wanted hugs damn it!
+ I was so happy that Cassie convinced Cole to bring Ramse back and we got the two of them back, on one last mission. I loved how the violence of Ramse first being brought back shifted into the tearful embrace and Cole reassuring Ramse ('you're okay brother') and Ramse's "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" It was so great to see them back working as a team, the tension and past put aside. The moment with the need to die to a good song and then ending up with Dirty Dancing's "The Time of My Life" and Ramse's laughter was great. I really wish that we'd gotten Ramse telling Cole that he forgave him.
+ I loved that Cassie had a gun outside the room when Cole brought back Ramse. I 100% believe she would kill him if she thought he was a danger to Cole and I love that. Also their awkward reunion amused me.
+ Jennifer being so happy to see Ramse was sweet and I liked his smile back. My favourite bit however was her immediately jumping into gossiping starting with the best piece first - Jones is Cole's grandma. ETA: I can't believe they cut the best part when Ramse follows that up with "We're family?" at Katarina because, even though he was minutes from being shot by Cole, they are brothers forever. It was wonderful. It wasn't even that long an exchange. I can see why they cut the long following rundown/planning session for what they were doing, the episode was perfectly understandable without it, but that little moment should have been kept in.
+ I was kind of hoping Jennifer would have more of a role at the end. I know why Cole was the one to convince Cassie but I kind of wish it had been Jennifer. Frankly the fact that he made it to the tower in time seems a stretch!
+ I loved that Katarina (with Jennifer's help) bluffed Olivia into bringing Titan to them.
+ Jennifer taunting Olivia was fun - "It looks like a little penis man. Is that because you're such a dick?" LOL!
+ I loved Katarina's goodbye to Jennifer - "My daughter will be exceptionally lucky. Hannah will be an amazing woman because of you." Aww. After all the tension at the beginning over this. It's probably the biggest compliment from Katarina.
+ I really liked that they all gave Jennifer a smiling standing ovation as she left.
+ Cole/Cassie had a moment that was super cute: when he was explaining that he had a plan and then got distracted by her reaction and demanded to know what the face she made was for, and failing to keep in her smile she explains "I've just never heard you have a plan" and then his affront and her amusement over it taking the end of the world, and it was all just super cute.
Oh, you know what would have been the best? If after that long awkward pause and hi when Cassie and Ramse met again if she'd followed it up with "so Cole has a plan" because you know if anyone can understand her in this it would be Ramse and then the two of them could rag on Cole together while he is annoyed (but secretly loving it).
+ I have been grouching about the lack of actual Cassie/Deacon reunion and while this isn't entire what I wanted Cassie finally getting to hug Deacon was wonderful and I loved her whispered "You are a good man." and his reaction to it all. This scene also I did something I wasn't expecting - it's made Deacon's unrequited love for Cassie finally work for me. It makes so much sense now. Was this the first time someone ever said that to him?
+ I love how this puts everything with Deacon this entire show in such different context now because he knew! Not everything but so much - he knew how things would end including the fact that he would die from the very beginning. Oh wow his behaviour during his last day works so much better even because there was weird sort of weight when he gave Jennifer his knife but that was because he knew his end was coming and that she would need it to convince him in the past/future. When he died he told them "I'd do it again" and he knows he would because he's always known. Oh Deacon. (I want to rewatch to see if this holds up.)
I wonder what Jennifer told him? How much did he actually know? I wonder if he and (old)Jennifer had secret meetings? Oh god, and that makes his accidental shooting of old!Jennifer even worse because they did know each other.
+ Also changing perspective a little is our future asshole going back in time and how what he says no has even more meaning. 'things are going to break' = he found his mom, she died in his arms and it was Hannah all along. 'you have to forgive yourself for what you've done' = not just his past and Ramse but the fact that he was the cause of everything all along. 'all you and I are going to have is in between' = because they are going to be unmade from existence! Same with him telling Jennifer "the last one I'm ever going to be", ouch.
+ I liked that it was Cassie who took down Olivia. I like that Olivia was right and it was the two of them at the end.
+ When they got pinned down and it seemed like all was lost for a moment all I could think was 'and this is why you should have gotten more people!' Cassie was all we need all the people we can get but then they stopped at just Ramse. What about Deacon and Marcus and Hannah, and, hell, Gale. idk. More people! The Daughters! Of course how it all shook out was good but for a moment I was annoyed.
+ I liked that moment with Deacon coming face to face with Cole and Ramse just for the fact that the three of them are coming from three separate times, and each of them have very different understandings of each other.
+ When Deacon showed up to save them I kind of wanted Cole to hug him lol. Imagine the reactions!
+ The Witness's red shirt 12 Monkeys followers really need to be less red shirty. When a machine gun firing car is careening towards you then you MOVE out of the way, yeesh.
+ I always assumed the show was going to show us what happened in the time Athan skipped between being rescued by Jennifer and rescuing his family but they didn't go back to it. I guess in the end it wasn't that important.
