The Vampire Diaries 3x16 Review
1912
This episode was okay but not as good as the previous two. There were a couple of things that didn't work for me.
Liked
• Elena/Alaric were wonderful. I loved the hug. I may actually love them more than Alaric/Damon.
• Stefan/Damon were excellent.
- So much love for Damon decided to help Stefan rediscover their 'old friend moderation' and his calling Stefan on his self-destructive cycle of guilty&brooding / Ripper / guilty&brooding. This was exactly what I was saying the last episode.
- "I want to, now. I will be there every second until you don't need me. 'Cause right now, you're all I got." - Damon I loved Damon vowing to be there for Stefan. That last part however feels like Damon is trying to disavow emotion as the reason for his actions. Like it's clear, and always has been, that Damon loves Stefan to a ridiculous degree (and it's mutual). He wants to be there and help Stefan because he loves him. He'd do it even if he did have someone else who he was just as close to so it's not just because Stefan is all Damon has.
• Stefan accidentally decapitating poor Mariana Lockwood while feeding one her made me laugh. It was just so ridiculous! My expression was basically Damon’s incredulous shocked one with a little more horrified and amused.
• Alaric being killer because of magic ring dissociative psychosis. Or possession. Or something. I didn't see that coming! It's a great twist and it could be very interesting and I like that the Gilbert rings have such a large negative.
• The Elena/Matt scenes were nice. I like that they still just hand out, I liked them investigating together and I liked him being so supportive and fairly nonjudgmental about her choices. Matt was being an amazing friend this episode.
- I liked Elena's realization that she fell for Stefan so quickly in the beginning because as a vampire he couldn't die and leave like her parents did and thus made her feel safe.
- "Damon just sort of snuck up on me. He got under my skin and no matter what I do I just can't shake him." - Elena
- "You never entirely stop loving someone you loved once." - Matt. I liked this. I also liked that Elena asked him if it was weird (her talking to him) and his "No. Not really." I'm not entirely sure I believe him. He clearly still has feelings for her (he always has really) and Elena knows that now.
• "Stay out of this, Damon. You getting involved is only going to make things worse. ...Don't make me put you in that cell with him." - Liz LOVE. We really need more Liz/Damon again.
• Damon and Rebekah reading and mocking Stefan’s diary entries was fun.
Didn't Like
• Sage and Sage/Damon. We didn't really get to know her but what we got left me meh. Mostly it might just be that I disliked how her interactions with Damon played out. I disliked - basically everything.
• So after discovering that the guy she’s been casually dating for a couple weeks is unconsciously killing people (people she knows) Meredith... sets up a situation that involves her shooting him in order to cause suspicion for the murders to fall on him simply so that she can clear his name. ...WHY? I don’t understand her motivation at all. Why not simply lay out her suspicions to Alaric or Liz? Why this loyalty to Alaric?
• "It's not that psycho Dr. Fell. She's a woman. There's no way that she could stab three grown men." - Damon ...WHAT? How does that make any sense coming out of Damon's mouth? Damon who has thought since the beginning that Meredith was the killer?
• Not necessarily 'dislike' but it does make me a little sad-face that Bill's death can be connected to Elena now. Alaric came to town because of her bio-mom Isobel, the ring was given to him by Isobel who got it from Elena's bio-dad and it is a Gilbert family heirloom. So now both Bonnie and Caroline have had a parent forced to make a choice between dying human or becoming a vampire. Bill chose death, Abby has chosen to become a vampire. I think that connection between Bonnie and Caroline is interesting but the way both can be traced back to Elena makes me wary. I wonder if the show is going anywhere with this?
Questions
• Is just wearing the ring dangerous or is it only dangerous if you keep needing to be saved by it? Should Elena start seriously worrying about Jeremy?
• I don’t buy Liz’s ‘theory’ about why Alaric might have committed the murders – Meredith and protecting her – so why did he do it and why those specific people? It’s interesting that Samantha Gilbert also targeted Founding Council members.
My theory is that it probably ties back to the creation of the rings. They’re magical in origin and so clearly a witch created them. What if the witch was coerced into making them? And then cursed them? Or with every death their connection with their bodies gets more tenuous allowing something to possess them. Something that wants to take out the Founding Families apparently.
• I am very confused about why Alaric would stab himself.
• Was Meredith telling Elena the truth about Alaric’s past? I want to know more especially about the restraining orders Isobel took against him. What was that about?
