Once Upon a Time 4x16 Thoughts
Poor Unfortunate Soul
Overall I liked it.
• And Ursula's gone. That's disappointing. I've been enjoying all we've gotten of the Queens of Darkness but I was hoping for a lot more. I was worried from the beginning that Rumplestiltskin would take over everything and while he hasn't entirely he's still very much in charge. More importantly we never really got the bad guy team up vs our heroes that I wanted. I want more evil Ursula hanging with her evil BFFs causing chaos.
• I love that Ursula turned herself into a octopus-creature as a means to gain power after being betrayed. That she took control of her own life and future.
• It was great seeing Ariel again but what I really loved was this exchange:
"Maybe villain's can't get their happy endings." - Hook
"Maybe that's because villains always go about getting them the wrong way." - Ariel
That is so spot on. Unfortunately I don't think Hook was really listening considering his later conversation with Emma where he reveals his worry that he'll lose his happy ending with her. I kind of wanted to shake him. 'A happy ending' isn't an end! And it's not something that's handed to you for being 'good' and that you get to keep for the rest of your life. Because life isn't a storybook.
It's even more irritating because he gets an example happening right in front of him with Ursula. She gets her voice back but that's not what gives her her happy ending. It's the choices she makes after that's going to do that. She could have shut her father out, she could have tried again to punish Hook for his role but she didn't. She missed her father so she forgave him. She accepted Hook's attempt to make up for the wrong he did her and held up her end of the bargain. She left the past behind her and returned home with hope. That's how you get your happy ending. Sigh.
• I loved Rumple turning August temporarily back into wood and really loved the whole bit with his nose growing when he lied.
• I also loved that August lied by omission by telling a literal truth to Rumplestiltskin and was believed. It was very satisfying.
• "Well, first thing you learn as a bandit: back door is usually unlocked." - Snow. Heh. I loved Snow taking out Cruella with a frying pan. This is exactly what we need more of.
• Emma/Hook haven't been working as well for me this season, for whatever reason, but I did really like their final scene. I liked Hook telling her she was her happy ending and her reaction. I find it really sad how she never even considered that she could be Hook's happy ending.
• I liked August this ep which is an unusual feeling. The Emma/August reunion was nice but is this really a happy ending? Certainly not for Marco.
• I loved that there had been a powerful sea goddess named Ursula and that our Ursula was named after her. The discrepancy bothered me when she first showed up so I'm glad it was addressed. Now did we ever learn why she was in 'our' world?
• The final confrontation between Poseidon and Hook really bugged me. We literally just watched him poof something away so why the hell couldn't he poof the shell fom Hook? He's Poseidon! He's a powerful sea god, he should be able to handle a human pirate much better than that. Plus you'd think as a pirate/sailor Hook would have a lot more respect for him. Hook's contempt was so obvious in their interactions. Either they should have made him the power being Poseidon deserves or they should have given him a different name and made him an undersea king instead.
• I wasn't completely sold on Ursula getting so many pieces of Ariel's classic story but by the end I was sold on it. I like the twist of Ursula losing her beautiful singing voice locked away in a shell and that being what she's been searching for.
• I was a little annoyed that we got Ursula and Ariel in the same episode and they never once interacted. Have they ever even met?
• I love that Hook's safe key is his hook.
• Elsa stuck the Jolly Roger in a bottle as punishment for Blackbeard terrorising her people. ... okay. I love the mention of Elsaa (please come back!) but since when do her magic powers encompass that? Why didn't Blackbeard and pirates end up trapped in the bottle as well? Especially considering Ariel somehow did. It doesn't really make much sense to me.
Overall I liked it.
