Revenge 4x23 Thoughts

Two Graves

I enjoyed it. It was a very fitting end to the series and a satisfying conclusion to Emily's story.

• Nolan/Emily were lovely. I loved their scene just before the wedding. I loved her holding his face in his hands while reassuring him that he would find a new purpose. I adored the little kiss to the cheek. I'm going to miss them.

• I love that before she left Emily made sure that she had taken care Nolan. That just made me ridiculously happy. I loved her setting him up to help someone else. It could be the start of Nolan beginning Revenge Inc. but I like to think of it more as Nolan beginning a business where he saves people rather then gets revenge for them. Possibly with Louise's help after they get back together, the wonder twins reunited. Then in a year or so Jack and Emily Amanda return to the Hamptons and move into Amanda's childhood home (with Charlotte living nearby) and then they both join Nolan's business and start a new chapter in all their lives of helping people in need. Together. That's how I chose to think their lives went.

• The wedding was lovely. I love that Nolan gave Ems away. I love that they took a moment to remember all those they loved and lost. I loved that Charlotte and Louise were both there. I loved Emily's gift of a new puppy to Jack - perfect. I liked them sailing away together on the boat David rebuilt.

• I'm sad that David died and so soon after being reunited with Emily. It felt so unfair. I got teary-eyed when he died. It was a beautiful scene. At the same time him dying felt appropriate. After all the horrible things Emily did in her quest to get revenge for David (and herself) it just feels right that she wouldn't get to have him too in the end. She got a happy ending but a bittersweet one that hasn't left her unscarred. That's how it should be.

• I loved that with her dying breath Victoria shot Emily and tried to take her with her. That is so Victoria. That is a far more appropriate death than blowing herself up. I really liked how their final confrontation played out.

• I loved that it was David who shot Victoria; stopping Emily from taking that final irreversible step and saving his daughter's soul in the end. I also love it because this season has been partially about David's own revenge - he started it by killing Conrad so it feels right that he'd end it, and Emily's revenege with it, by killing Victoria. This felt like how his story should end.

•I didn't get the David/Charlotte scene I really wanted which I'm sad about. They could have easily had Charlotte sitting with their father on the porch in the flashback to his death, with her leaving to give Emily a private moment with their dad. Sigh. But at least she was in the finale enough that I can easily imagine that she got to spend time with him before his death.

That said I very much enjoyed the small glimpses of her that we did get. With Emily visiting David's grave; at the wedding, being there for her sister; and in the flashback saving Emily's life. I loved the way she said "That's what mother would have wanted." I feel like we got enough to conclude that the Emily/Charlotte relationship is now in a very good place and that makes me happy. I do wish we could have gotten a hug between them. Also a Charlotte/Jack scene would have been nice though I liked the little moment of acknowledgement between them during Jack's speech.

• I love the twist that Emily survived by getting a heart transplant from Victoria. That seems rather appropriate. She was dreaming it but I'm sure it's true.

• In the end Emily's greatest revenge was that Victoria was alone when she died. That her beloved son was dead, that her eldest son and her daughter had despised her so much they hadn't bothered to come to her funeral and that her desperately grasped at last minute adopted daughter was the one to betray her to her death.

• I am very happy that Louise realised the truth about Victoria. That even given everything she had wanted - Victoria's love and acceptance - she saw herself as the pawn she had been and went to Nolan and Emily with the truth. The sad thing is that while Victoria has only ever used Louise I truly do think she was moved by Louise's honest grief and that in her desire to be loved she might have been the mother Louise always wanted her to be. [Maybe, but probably not.]

• I didn't get the Nolan/Louise reunion I wanted or the Louise apology but again there was enough left open that I can buy that Nolan and Louise got back together. Louise being at the wedding made me very happy and she was placed in the second row which would indicate that she ended the series very close to the revenge gang which also makes me even happy.

"I trained for four years with the most dangerous sensei I know." - Nolan. I loved Nolan taking on, and out, Margaux on his own. Although the fact that he was going to let her walk away free and clear after her help in capturing White Gold shows his much gentler revenging than Emily. I really appreciate that Margaux stepped up and decided to turn herself in.

• I like the reveal that it was Victoria's mother's body that was burned in Grayson Manor. That felt appropriate. The reveal about her father on the other hand was maybe a bit much.

• I love that Emily and Nolan had a plan in place in case of one of them being arrested again. Also this: "You know I have the most distinct sensation of deja vu."

• David/Jack have gotten a number of lovely scenes in the back half of the season and Jack asking David's permission to marry Emily was another one.

• Along with regretting the lack of David/Charlotte both in this episode and the latter half of this season I also really regret the lack of David/Nolan and the fact that they never did recover their relationship. Nolan loved and idolised David, thought of him as a father, and David cared for Nolan a lot but their relationship never really recovered. I can't even think of a significant scene between the two of them in the latter half of the season. That makes me sad for both of them but especially Nolan.

• Ben was died in his home in an accident? How do you accidentally get stabbed in the back? Even after death he's ruining my suspension of disbelief.
