Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun.

+ I liked the new trio a lot. I loved Rey. She was awesome. I loved how capable she was and how kind [helping BB8 (I loved that she talked to him like a person) and Finn.] Finn was lovely. I loved his attempts, and failures, at bluffing. Poe was surprising good too. I liked his snark and cockiness.

+ Rey/Finn were adorable. I enjoyed their bickering to working surprisingly well together to deep bonding through shared danger. They bonded maybe a bit too quickly but then I think they're both very lonely people so it does make some sense. Finn also glommed onto Poe really quickly - see their reunion - so I think that's just how Finn is.

+ BB-8 is adorable.

+ I loved the scene where Kylo Ren tries to extract information from Rey. The whole thing was excellent as was the following one where Rey slowly tests her ability with the Force and figures out how to Jedi mind trick someone.

+ Kylo Ren being such a huge temper-tantrum throwing drama queen was hilarious. That second temper tantrum when he destroyed his torture room and two passing stormtroopers slowly backed away makes me giggle every time I think about it. It was one of my favourite parts of the movie.

+ I found Kylo to be pretty interesting in large part because he's both intimidating/scary and whiny and insecure.

+ Han/Rey bonding was great. I loved how excited she got about the ship being the Millennium Falcon. I loved him offering her a place on it.

+ I saw Han's death coming and I think I liked how it played out? I definitely liked that last moment of Han reaching out to cup Ben's face before dying.

+ This movie needed more Leia and Leia/Han but what we did get was good. They totally missed the perfect chance at Han and Leia's goodbye to have him tell her "I love you" and have her reply "I know". It would have been so great. The hug was lovely but no kiss?

+ I found the fate of the original trio really sad. Episode VI ended in such a positive way - they were so young and full of hope for the future and things looked so good. They got a short while for happiness but then there was betrayal and a loss of son causing a rift and Luke failing and running away and the three of the separated for so long as a resistance is once again needed. Luke and Han never got to see each other again!

+ I wish the Kylo Ren/Rey fight had ended in a draw. Kylo Ren being injured definitely helped to even things out between them and I loved the part with Rey finding the Force inside her and coming back strong. Also her pulling Luke's lightsaber to her before Kylo Ren could get it. Overall the fight itself was really great and I loved it. But I think it would have worked better if the earth had cracked and separated them before Rey defeated him. It felt like she got too good too fast. Or not 'good' per se since she had no technique [which I loved] but I guess powerful? idk. Plus I like the idea of it setting up them finishing the fight the next time they meet over setting up a re-match the next time they meet.

+ So Rey's totally Luke's daughter, yes/yes? Or maybe Kylo Ren's sister? Either way she has to be a Skywalker. I love the idea but at the same time I'm having a hard time with the idea of Luke abandoning her like that even if he was being hunted.

I wondered if perhaps Kylo couldn't kill her during his destruction of Luke's school, perhaps because she is family, and instead took her and dropped her off on an out of the way planet. What is the timeline on all this anyway? How much older is Kylo than Rey and how old is she even supposed to be? Could that even work? If they're the same ages as their actors he should be about 10 years older than her or so. If she was five in the flashback then he would have been 15 so it could just barely work. ... Actually was her being stranded on Jakku even connected to the destruction of Luke's school? I just assumed but there's nothing to say so. Hmm.

+ I really, really want Luke training Rey and Finn to be Jedi in the next film. And the two of them bonding over it and them bonding with Luke. And maybe a future fight scene with the three of them against Kylo Ren and his master (who's name I can't remember so let's go with Darth Gollum].

+ I really disliked that when the team returned to the rebel base at the end Leia walked up to Rey as Chewie walked past her and into the celebrating crowd. ... wtf? Sure, Rey is half of our POV characters, she felt a bond with Han and was very affected by his death but it's Chewie! They needed each other in that moment! It should have been Leia walking into Chewbacca's arms and them grieving together as Rey watches. Or if they wanted this Leia/Rey moment so much then they should have had Chewbacca injured/not there instead of walking past Leia and them completely ignoring each other. Grr.

+ I loved Chewie hugging Leia when they first saw each other. I wish we could have gotten another one at the end when they both, but especially Chewie, needed it. That scene of his huddled alone and grieving was so sad. Poor Chewie.

+ I wanted a short Leia/Rey scene where they actually talked to each other. Their last scene could have been included a minute of them talking. There are lots of potential topics - Han/Kylo or the force/history or the resistance or Rey's past - literally anything! Hell, Rey's going to find Luke after he's been missing for decades, you'd think Leia would have a message for him or some tips on how the deal with him.

+ I wish Finn had shown some hesitance or regret about killing fellow stormtroopers. By making Finn a person and giving him backstory they've made all the stormtroopers more than just canon fodder. I mean they were kidnapped, brainwashed and trained to be soldiers from childhood!

+ How does that First Order weapon even work? If it was in the same system as the Republic headquarters world (?) then presumably it was their sun it ate and thus destroying the planet itself isn't even necessary? Also how the hell can it even do that to a sun?? None of the weapon/planets stuff made sense to me.

+ It really bothered me that the rebel meeting was ended by Poe instead of Leia who is the one who's supposed to be in charge. It also bothered me that all the people at the table were men. There were some women in the background but I wanted more [in all scenes including with the First Order). I wanted more General Leia too. We didn't see her doing much. I hope the next movie has more of that and maybe Leia as a politician too.
