Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Act 41 Review

Actually, I’m A Senshi!

Awards

Hottie Of the Week: Makoto. She looked lovely.

Funniest Moment: … Usagi’s interpretation of how Makoto and Motoki’s conversation would go. Hee.

Cutest Moment: The girls in their animal costumes were very cute. I love that Usagi was a bunny and Makoto was a turtle.

Saddest Moment: “Mako-chan. I… I have the power to destroy the world.” Oh, Usagi. It appears as if reality has just sunk in. Her expression was just so… desolate and horrified and the music was perfect. Of course it’s probably easier to realize scope when there’s burning wreckage around you and a hurt friend in your arms.

WTF of the Week: As if to make up for the fact that last week had no wtf’s this week is full of tons of little ones and one bigger one. So I decided that instead of just posting the big one I’d put them all up.

#1 was definitely Princess Sailor Moon not managing to kill the youma. She caused a lot of destruction, was flinging around enough power to easily have taken him out and even actively attacked him (which missed what!?) and still didn’t manage to kill him. Say, what? She’s a badass! Please.

… All the kids continuing to run around playing when their teachers had just collapsed in front of them.
… None of the girls, especially Ami, recognizing ‘Nephenie’ as Nephrite was a bit unbelievable. He is not that different and the name is unusal enough that even a mangled version of it should immediately bring Nephrite to mind.
… Jupiter abandoning Shota, without even telling Motoki to take care of him (even though he clearly would) made me shake my head.
… The abrupt shift from late evening to night from the beginning of the fight scenes to the end of them was pretty strange.
… Ami leaving her volunteer job and not only not hurrying back but apparently not going back at all was very WTF. This is Ami.
… Makoto and Naru still haven’t having gotten to know each other even though it’s been a year? It’s not like with Rei – Makoto goes to the same school with Naru! They’re both close friends with Usagi and Ami!
… The same youma showing up yet again is getting old. I miss the old youma with the more elaborate and interesting costumes. If they were going to keep using one idea over and over why couldn’t it have been more interesting?

Coolest Moment:

There were two things I thought were very cool this episode so I divided it into two categories:

Visual: Jupiter’s use of lightning in this episode looked great. First her doing it without the background/effects and then with the effects (first time we’ve gotten both I think) while Motoki watches in awe. It looked very cool.

Story: Naru and Motoki learning the truth about the senshi. Or well that Makoto is Jupiter (Naru/Motoki) and Usagi is Moon (Naru). I have really wanted wider exposure on the senshi and while it looks like that won’t be happening I am so happy that we got Naru and Motoki at least some bit into the secret.

Best Senshi Moment: Usagi. I loved that her response to Ami’s ‘perfect score’ report card was an enthusiastic “Great job, Ami-chan! I’ll have to start doing better!” That is so Usagi and so much about why I love her. I also loved this episode her knowing smile when she was observing Makoto and Motoki at the beginning, and her being a bunny, and her enthusiasm for Makoto/Motoki and her past self showing up and causing destruction and her reining things in.

Best Senshi Interaction: Usagi/Ami conspiring together to set up Makoto and Motoki was so adorable. I loved their grins and whispering and then the fact that they decided on telling Motoki that a new species of turtle was discovered... so adorable! I loved Ami’s smile during her scene with Motoki. Runner-up: Jupiter/Usagi at the end of the episode.

Other

“He doesn’t mean to be bad. He’s just kind of all alone... and loses his temper.” – Motoki. Oh, Motoki. He is such a good guy. I loved the look on Ami’s face as she looked in the direction that Nephrite had run. Getting some Ami/Nephrite interaction made me happy and how it all played out has me hopeful that we’ll be getting more.

• Makoto/Motoki, and Motoki himself, were pretty cute throughout the episode.

“It was a decision made back in my past life. I know that very clearly.” – Makoto. Hmm, so one of the things that Makoto remembers best from her past life was her complete devotion to her princess? I, predictably, love that. Between Jupiter and Venus, I wonder if in this canon the Senshi had made a vow of chastity to their princess like Mars did in the manga?

• I love the idea of Usagi and Makoto being trapped in a situation where they had to transform in front of someone to save them. It’s a solid idea (and much used). But the execution wasn’t so good. I found myself wondering why they didn’t just run as soon as the youma appeared. I think Makoto’s situation played out more believably. I’d buy Motoki running in half-cocked to protect her and Shota and getting hurt, and it’s a good reason for why Makoto couldn’t run afterwards. I would have liked though for it to have been more obvious that Motoki was in clear and present danger from the youma because I found myself wondering why Makoto didn’t go hide behind a bush before transforming.

• The problem here appears to be that Serenity, while badass, is very careless and reckless and rather self-absorbed when she is fighting. It’s not even that her power is out-of-control though that is clearly a problem. It’s that Serenity doesn’t give any thought to anyone but her target. I thought so back when she first appeared. Some of her redirected blasts went mighty close to the Senshi. It was really only a matter of time before someone got hurt. I find this all pretty confusing though because she could just hit the attacks back at her attacker.

• It appears that Beryl, or maybe Metaria’s, plan is indeed to cause Usagi to use the power of the crystal, thus powering Metaria more and more. I don’t think they were expecting the arrival of Serenity and Princess Sailor Moon though.

• Oh, also it appears that now the ‘power’ that’s so great within Usagi is the crystal and that the power that was in Serenity that caused all that destruction was also the crystal. So that leaves the huge question of: why was the crystal within Serenity and how the hell did it get there?!
