Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Act 44 Review

Zoisite Turned Back Into A Stone.

Hottie Of the Week: Zoisite. The death scene and the scene with Mamoru were particularly lovely.

Best Shibby Moment: Mamoru telling Zosite “Do not abandon what is important to you.” before leaning slightly back and closing his eyes. I just really liked that moment. That whole scene felt very Endymion.

Funniest & Cutest Moment: Nephrite’s reaction to Ami’s cookies – “Tastes bad… terrible… awful…” all while pulling more cookies from the bag and fervently eating them – and then Ami’s huge grin and giggle. Aww!

Saddest Moment: Zoisite dying, turning into a stone that Sailor Moon catches… and which then cracks and blows away. I knew going in that he was going back to stone form, I mean it’s the title of the episode, but I thought it was going to be dying like it had been ‘dying’ the other time it happened to him. Instead this moment – when he cracks and then blows away in the silence – felt so very permanent, more even than Nephrite’s ‘death’, like he is really truly gone.

WTF of the Week:

#1: Jupiter and Mercury not tracking Moon down. The last they saw was her going after a powerful youma and while them being distracted and worried about Venus is understandable it appears that they didn’t bother to split up and for one of them to go after Moon. It doesn’t really fit their characters and it bugged me. Also bugging me was the fact that neither of them appeared to have called Mars. This could have be solved easily by seeing them, or one of them (Jupiter), standing behind Moon watching.

#2: Minako ordering Rei out – of the Crown, of the Senshi – made me go ‘wait, what’ (and also a bit ‘bitch please’ – she’s kept herself apart from them and regardless of her being the leader the four of them have made themselves family, and that room is home for Rei, so what right does she have kicking her out?) as did Rei leaving and none of the others protesting more than they did (though I guess they were in shock).

- Why did the Senshi have such a hard time against the youma at first and why didn’t they use their powers against them from the start? Also Venus not going after Moon and the other youma, or sending one of the others, seemed off. She is all about protecting their princess and there is no way I’ll believe that she wouldn’t have gone after her or sent one of the others even if it would have endangered them.

- How, and why, did Moon move Zoisite from where he was injured, beside a building, to the base of the tree at the top of the hill?

Coolest Moment: I really loved Minako being in the Senshi Crown room but I don’t know if that really counts. I did love Zoisite saving Sailor Moon.

Best Senshi Moment: Sailor Moon getting herself out of the youma’s choke-hold made me very happy as did her holding her own against the youma for so long.

Best Senshi Interaction: I liked Makoto interrupting during the Rei/Minako fight to state that even if Venus hadn’t awoken she was still one of them.

• I can’t help but feel like Ami made the cookies specifically for Nephrite but couldn’t just offer them to him and so made it a sort of group offer. The whole thing is adorable, Ami’s grin was adorable. Is the show really purposefully trying to get us to ship Ami/Nephrite? Because it’s working!

• Something interesting: TPTB have given both Makoto and Ami potential love interests – Motoki and Nephrite, respectively – but haven’t given Rei or Minako ones. Instead we’ve gotten the two of them largely wrapped up in each other and being very subtexty. Sailor Moon is the series that gave us two homosexual canon relationships (Haruka/Michiru, sometimes Kunzite/Zoisite), implied same-sex flirting (Haruka/Usagi, Minako/Haruka, Makoto/Haruka), very suggestive and slashy art, as well as the gender-bending Sailor Stars with Seiya falling in love with Usagi. So maybe this was on purpose?

• I do love that Zoisite is just as devoted to Endymion as the Senshi are to Usagi. I wonder how the other Shitennou are going to react to his true death? Is Kunzite going to blame Usagi and/or Mamoru? I am happy that Usagi was there with him when he died and that he wasn’t alone. I love that his final thoughts weren’t just for his prince but also for the other Shitennou.

• Before Zoisite broke and crumbled into dust I was entertaining the idea that Usagi would keep his stone, and then as the battle heated up each of the other Shitennou would ‘die’ and turn to stone and Usagi would somehow get a hold of them as well, and then in the final episode Usagi after they’d defeated Metaria and Beryl, Usagi would present the stones to Mamoru, saying that they could bring them back.
