Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Act 45 Review

Youma Metaria’s Violent Attack

Wow, the end of this episode. Wow.

Hottie Of the Week: Tie: Minako and Makoto both looked fabulous.

Funniest Moment & Cutest Moment: Motoki and Nephrite provided some much needed lightness. Nephrite’s expression as he carried all of Motoki’s bags was amusing, Motoki buying the turtle protective charm for Makoto was sweet, Motoki showing how good a person he is by giving Nephrite an advance and Nephrite showing growth by actually saying ‘thank you’ was nice, and Motoki’s expression at that and then both those expressions when Nephrite is holding the giant horns made me smile. I love that Nephrite wants to pay Ami back. Hopefully with something other than those horns.

Saddest Moment: There were so many sad moments in this episode. This was just a really sad episode. I can think of five moments that would fit here easily. I’m going to go with:

Minako and Artemis’s talk – “Why are you so stubborn? Don’t talk as Venus. Speak to me as Aino Minako!” and “At this rate I’m going to lose you.” Minako says after the second sort of jokingly but not: “Sounds like a confession of love to me.” and it is. Artemis loves her so much and it really shows here. His pain when she refused to listen to him, when she ordered him to leave her, and then his dejected walk out (not even noticing Makoto standing right there!) made me want to hug him so much.

Also the scene made me want to hug Minako who is so desperately trying not to feel, not to be a part of this life because she doesn’t think she’ll be allowed to. She learned the truth about her past when she had no hope for this life and it gave her something to hold onto. I don’t blame her for fighting not to let go of it but it makes me so sad.

Runner-up: Minako’s expression when she couldn’t henshin.

WTF of the Week:

1# - Mercury being so injured by the youma that she ends up de-transforming really bugged me. Um, what? I buy the youma kicking their asses since it was possessed by Metaria but it didn’t feel like Mercury was beat up enough to cause her to de-transform. Plus I just don’t like the idea that if the Senshi are injured enough they would de-transform. It doesn’t make practical sense that they would go to a weaker state when injured.

Coolest Moment / Best Senshi Moment: Sailor Jupiter’s final attack on the youma Metaria. I was torn between ‘awesome!’ and ‘Jupiter, no!’ I loved her calling in the lightning storm (finally a good reason for the change from day to night), I actually loved her willingness to sacrifice her life to fulfill their past mission (and end all the pain in their current lives). I loved her holding onto the youma and calling down the lightning on herself, not the youma as I would have thought, super-charging herself and apparently making herself into a bomb. Wow. I loved the effects of Jupiter glowing with her power. I refuse to believe however that Jupiter actually killed herself. I mean I would have heard about that right? They wouldn’t really kill her like this right?! No, no they wouldn’t. Usagi knew something was happening and the Ginzuisho reacted so I am sure that she (or rather Princess Sailor Moon) ends up saving Makoto but still… yikes. What an ending.

Best Senshi Interaction: Makoto/Minako. Of course Makoto would understand where Venus is coming from. Honestly, I love the character continuity on this show. When a character acts in some way it makes sense for who they are and I love it. Anyway, I found their hospital scene very sad – “I exist to fulfill the mission from the past life.” oh, Makoto – though at the same time I was happy that Minako didn’t find herself completely alone

Other

• I loved that Usagi felt Metaria’s presence on Earth but especially that she felt something wrong with Makoto.

• Is it wrong that this episode made me ship Artemis/Minako a bit?

• I’m guessing that Jupiter’s willingness to sacrifice herself is going to be the push needed for Minako to stop clinging to her past life and accept her current one?

• So did Mio specifically choose Mars as the one to confront or was she just the closest senshi to where she first appeared? If anyone I would expect Mio to target Usagi or Minako. Usagi especially now since she’s alone. I can’t remember one interaction between Mio and Rei though it appears that she had at least heard of her.

• The separation of the Senshi, again, is not working for me. Especially:

- Rei’s disappearance from battle and from the others over the last two episodes when she knows what’s happening with Usagi but still hasn’t apparently tried to contact her or kept tabs on what was going on.

- Ami, and the others but especially Ami, thinking it’s a good idea to keep Usagi in the dark about everything that’s happening with Minako and Rei. I understand the logic here – Usagi is stressed and unhappy already and she doesn’t want to add to it (always protecting her) – but Ami should realize what Usagi must feel suddenly finding herself so cut off from the others since Ami went through that herself not too long ago. I felt so sad for Usagi.

• Kunzite having apparently killed himself to free himself from the curse – what?! I didn’t mention it in my review for the previous act because though he stabbed himself I didn’t think that he’d actually killed himself. Or – actually, all that was left were the black petals. Instead of dying or returning to stone form I wonder if he returned to being Shin?

• Rei and Minako’s actresses are so skinny – their arms are like sticks! I don’t know if they’ve gotten skinnier or I’ve just noticed now but yikes.
