High School of the Dead Episode 9 - 11 Reviews

Episode 9 ‘The Sword and the Dead’

• Takashi’s idea to lure the zombies with the noise of the car was a good idea – that was then completely wasted when they started fighting. Isn’t the whole point of creating a diversion so that you can sneak quietly away?

• The revelations about Saeto in this episode – that she loves fighting and killing, that she was attacked months ago and put her attacker in the hospital and had fun doing it, that she finds joy in the kill – were all interesting but all I could think was that ‘she’s perfect for the zombie apocalypse! Why all the angst?!’ I loved her unquestioningly confidant ‘of course he didn’t stand a chance against me’ about the guy that attacked her.

• So what exactly happened between them that night in the temple? Did they sleep together? His casual touching of her breast the next morning seemed to point that way.

“I’ll keep on admiring you as long as I live! I’ll always believe that you are the best woman ever. So don’t die on me!” – Takashi. I got the feeling here that this was very much motivated by him wanting to snap her out of her fugue state more than anything. At the end of the episode he states “I accepted her darkness. ... I accepted it for me to survive, of course.” which also seems to imply that. And yet I think he really does admire, respect and like her. I also found myself thinking about Rei who Takashi reveals in the first episode he’s in love with – could he mean that line about ‘best woman’ or wouldn’t that be reserved for Rei? On the other hand, I like it better that Takashi would love Rei but not in a way that he idolises her and think she’s perfect.

• I loved Takashi and Saeko arriving at the compound arm in arm.

Episode 10 ‘The Dead’s House Rules’

• This episode was kind of eh. I feel like there could have been something more done with the whole situation of them being back among adults and being treated as helpless kids again. I would have thought that would be very interesting but it wasn’t really. The idea that they would choose to split off from a large well armed and well prepared group who at the time seemed very likely to make it somewhere safe was very irritating. I understand them not liking being told what to do and being taken out of the decision making process but that would have been a monumentally stupid decision. But it does tie back to how closely they bonded together which I do like.

Episode 11 ‘Dead Storm Rising’

• Takashi being named leader made me sigh and rolls my eyes. Yeah, like I didn’t see that coming. But while it annoys me a little at the same time I actually kind of agree with it. Originally I’d picked Saeko to be leader but after her killer instinct revelation I actually don’t think she’d be best. It’d be nice if Rei was a possibility but she’s weirdly weak in some ways and I don’t think she’d make a good leader. Shizuka’s out of course and Hirano too I think. Saya is a possibility and she is very smart but she’s also sharp and aggressive but not a fighter. I think the group would work best with Takashi in the leadership role (this annoys me).

“I don’t know whether to be happy or angry.” – Takashi. I understand him here. The way that Rei comes onto him, chooses him, says exactly what he’s always wanted to hear – I understand his confusion.

“Because women are raw.” – Rei. Um, what? Cultural differences, cultural difference, cultural differences.

• I really love that there was no jealousy between Rei and Saeko when they met outside Takashi’s door. I was expecting it so to not get it makes me really pleased.

• Hmm... they are ‘actually’ what exactly? Sisters? Both in love with the same guy? I really want to know!

“Take your students that have been infected by your evil!” Um, seriously? How the hell does he know anything about them considering he hasn’t met any of them? He’s basically condemning them to death just for arriving with Shido.

• The idiocy at the end with various governments launching missiles makes me shake my head. I definitely believe in people doing ridiculously stupid things but I’m not sure I’d believe this pointless stupidity. I mean the world as they know it is basically ending... so they want to help it along? How does launching missiles/nukes at... wherever help anything? At this point the infection is worldwide so it can’t be to stop it. It’s all very dumb.
