It was okay but I liked the first one better.
Positive
+ Toothless continues to be the best. I love his so much. Hiccup/Toothless is also wonderful. I love that their bond broke through the Bewielderbeast's control.
+ The dragons were excellent. Frankly the movies need more about the dragons. I loved Snowfly playing fetch. Lazy Grump is adorable. Toothless and Cloudjumper were fun together, loved Toothless/Snowfly in the background playing. Baby dragons being scamps!
+ I thought Astrid/Hiccup were cute together. I loved Astrid braiding his hair at the beginning and that the braids stay in for the whole movie. I loved her teasing him.
+ I liked what Hiccup and Astrid were up to with their mapping and making contact with new lands. I wish the movie had been more about that.
+ I loved Hiccup's gliding suit and his fire sword was fascinating. I wish we'd seen more of him inventing.
+ I liked Valka the dragon saviour. Her introduction scenes were excellent. I also liked her reunion with Hiccup, and their relationship. That hug between them was really lovely.
+ Continue to love Gobber.
+ I liked seeing Berk five years on now with dragons an every day part of their lives. The dragon game at the beginning was great. I loved how much all the Vikings loved their dragons.
Negative
+ I didn’t like the basis of this movie being about Hiccup becoming the chief of Berk. It’s clear that it’s not a role he wanted and I wish the story had continued in the vein of the first where Hiccup finds his own path instead of it being him finding inner chief and taking over as his father wanted. It was disappointing. I wish they’d leaned more into him as an inventor and explorer.
+ I didn’t like that Stoick died. Doing so while saving Hiccup from mind-controlled Toothless was meh. Doing so immediately after being happily reunited with Valka was meh. Completely unnecessary.
+ Astrid’s characterisation felt weird to me. It makes sense that she'd have loosened up in the last five years and it's nice that she's happy but something about her still felt off.
+ Eret saving them from Drago and Astrid not having a part in that short fight annoyed me a bit but I was super irritated that Eret was riding Snowfly when they escaped Drago's ships during the fight while Astrid was behind Fishlegs on Meatlug for some reason, and then she spent the fight sitting behind Eret on her own dragon. This actually might be what was bothering me about Astrid - she felt a lot more passive than in the last movie.
+ I wish Valka had had more of a role in the final fights against Drago. I just felt like her spending twenty years with the dragons, learning and protecting them (and consequently abandoning her son and people), should have lead to having an important role but in the end she was only there to offer Hiccup her support. It was really disappointing.
+ Stoick saving Valka twice during the fight made me sigh. She seemed so badass in her introduction and then it didn't really come to anything. She should have saved him.
+ Valka being thin after the joke in the first about Stoick’s helmet being half her breastplate annoyed me.
