Untold and Unmade by Sarah Rees Brennan

For the most part I quite enjoyed this trilogy. I liked the writing which I found very light and breezy, occasionally humourous and an easy read.

The Witch With No Name by Kim Harrison

It was okay. I think it’s probably a good thing this is the last book because I’ve been generally liking each new book less than the last and this way I won’t be tempted to keep reading a series I no longer like.

Night Broken by Patricia Briggs

I really enjoyed this one. I do love how much of an easy read these books are. I can remember liking some of the middle books less but these last two books have been good. There wasn’t anything I actually disliked about this book.

The world building is amazing. It took a bit to get into but I really enjoyed it. It’s a good book. That said I had two big problems with the latter half that really affected my enjoyment of it.

This was really not what I was expecting based on the movie. The movie was fun and funny and unfortunately I just didn't get that from this book. This volume was - boring.

So disappointing. I won't be reading more.

Set during WWII two very different young women become unlikely best friends. One is a pilot and one is spy. When a mission to France goes wrong the spy is captured by the Gestapo and the story begins with her written 'confession' to her captors.

I loved it. It was brilliant. It was beautifully written and emotionally moving. The characters were wonderful and the friendship between the two girls was amazing. I loved them. The structure of the book was unusual but it ended up working really well. It was also emotional reaction )

I would definitely highly recommend this book with a note that I think it would be best read with no previous knowledge about it. Don't even read the blurb on the book.

Knight and Day: I liked it a lot more by the end then I thought I would based on the beginning. short, slightly spoilery )

Cold Magic and Cold Fire by Kate Elliott:

I really enjoyed these! I like the writing and will definitely be checking out some of the authors other series.

The world building is original and fascinating. It's a kind of bizarre but wonderful mix of... industrial revoltution + African diaspora into Europe + a broken but still around Roman empire + magic (ghouls and mages) + a really neat spirit world + sentient descendants of dinosaurs... it is really cool and I'd love to read more of this world.

Or as it's described on her site: Afro-Celtic post-Roman icepunk Regency fantasy adventure with airships, Phoenician spies, the intelligent descendents of troodons, and a dash of steampunk whose gas lamps can be easily doused by the touch of a powerful cold mage.

Before reading this book I re-read Black Magic Sanction and Pale Demon and in comparison I found this book very weak. I liked it but not as much as previous books.

Hit List by Laurell K. Hamilton

Overall I found it a little boring. The book felt like it was just keeping Anita in a holding pattern. Mostly though I'm wondering why I'm still reading this series.

Overall I was not very impressed with True Blood last season and I actually had no intention of watching season four. Then I watched the trailer for it (this one) and then a couple other ones and now I'm actually kind of excited about it.spoilers for trailers )

I read Princess Academy by Shannon Hale and thought it was wonderful. I found myself wishing I could have read it back when I was a pre-teen. short, slightly spoilery )I will definitely check out more of her books.

I love this series. I know when I’m finished it I am going to find myself wishing I hadn’t read it yet just so that I could have the pleasure of reading it again without any knowledge. I am going to be so sad when I run out of books because I could read forever about these characters.

I have seen this book series rec’d over and over and it has been on my ‘to read’ list for awhile and I’m kicking myself for not reading it sooner because it was awesome. I loved this book so much. As soon as I finished it I both wanted to immediately re-read it (it has so much happening and in the beginning I was confused by the names and created words so I know I missed some of what was happening) and to immediately read the next book. I will rec this book just as enthusiastically as anyone else now.

I finished the Jacky Faber series and just wanted to get down a couple thoughts on it. I really enjoyed them and I can't wait till the next book.

I don’t understand why there isn’t more talk/recs for this series because they are really fun and Jacky’s fabulous and so are most of the secondary characters. I really like the way that the books deal with gender and race and class and sexuality (Jacky is very progressive in a largely conservative time). The books aren’t just full of white characters with an occasional non-white character in the background but rather have an expanding cast of characters of many different races. I love how full of female characters and female relationships most of the books are (minus the first). I love how they deal with female characters. I like that class issues aren’t just black and white. I love that there are gay characters in the books.

a couple thoughts - spoilers up to book 7 'In the Wake of the Lorelei Lei' )
