I liked it. Well done scary story.

+ For some reason I thought this was about a woman alone in Antarctica during modern times haunted by something supernatural and was surprised when I started it to find it an epistolary story about a man in 1937 in the Arctic. Who’s haunted by something supernatural. So that was a bit of a surprise when I started.

+ Great atmosphere and tension. Very creepy and great sense of creeping dread.

+ I wasn't very fond of Jack at the beginning but over the course of the book I warmed up to him considerably. His change of opinion on the dogs helped but mostly I think it was deep sympathy for him in this really horrible situation he's found himself in.

+ Jack’s ending was much happier than I was expecting and him ending up mostly happy in Jamaica with Isaac was a pleasant surprise. Super happy Isaac survived. I even really like that he and Augie became friends afterwards.

+ I suspected that there was more to Jack's feelings for Gus but I wasn’t expecting Jack being in love with Gus to be acknowledge, I loved it. Plus it made Jack stubbornly staying even as it got worse more believable for me. Jack, unknowingly in love with Gus, and thus wanting to impress him and save his expedition worked for me. I'm glad for Jack that even though Gus died Jack understood what his feelings for him were.

+ Gus's death was so unexpected and happened so quickly so close to the end it was a shock.

+ I liked Jack's dislike of the dogs shifting to loving Isaac and through him liking the other dogs to him depending so hard on their presence to his 'happy ending' involving Isaac's presence so heavily.

+ There was a bunch of mentions of animal cruelty and animal death which I was not a fan of though it wasn't excessive and I suppose to be expected. Except for the seal thing with Augie, that was horrifying and put me off Augie hard. Maybe that was the first step of liking Jack - how horrified and disgusted he was by it too.
