Scratches
This episode, for me, was all about the Sookie/Bill/Eric stuff. I adored it all. In fact this is actually one of my favourite episodes because of it. Other then the adorableness of Jessica/Hoyt and Jessica with her new parents the other stuff in the episode was nothing I cared about – Sam freaking about Maryann was whatever, Tara losing herself in Maryann’s life was whatever, and I actually didn’t even bother to watch the Jason stuff for which I have zero interest in.
• I knew Jessica/Hoyt was coming because it was something I came across pre-watching the show and remembered but I wasn’t expecting to like it this much. They’re so adorable! I kept going ‘aww’ with them all the time. And he thinks it’s so awesome that she’s a vampire (just like she does) and he is so amazed by her (which she needs) and its Hoyt so he’s gentle and sweet and so non-threatening. He’s perfect for her. The fact that she didn’t bite him, but instead went for the whole making out with a guy for the first time instead, speaks volumes about her and their potential. She’s less than a month old and she didn’t go for the blood! Wow.
• I still love Jessica. I was a little worried I might begin to find her irritating but I’m not. I am happy we’re going to get to see another side of her with Hoyt though. I loved her steeling herself, and bravely, asking for Tru Blood at Merlotte’s and then her pleasure when Hoyt thought it was awesome. I felt sorry for her when she woke to the empty house.
• I love that the episode was book-ended by the whole Bill/Sookie as Jessica’s parents thing they still have going. The episode starts with the parents in the front of the car fighting while the daughter sits in the back and pouts. It ends with the parents coming home to find their daughter in a compromising position with a boy on the living room couch (complete with Bill freaking out and Sookie trying to calm him down). I loved also Jessica telling Bill that Sookie wanted him to go after her and him being all stubborn about it. Jessica’s expression at how he thought things would play out was perfect.
• Eric: She is extremely lazy. But loyal. How’s yours?
Bill: Petulant. Dangerous. Afraid.
Eric: I’m glad to see you’re bonding.
• There were three things that bugged me this episode.
1) When Sookie saw the minotaur creature she turned and ran, like any sane person would, but she didn’t scream. She didn’t yell for Bill. And that doesn’t make sense. If she had he probably would have gotten to her in time and it doesn’t make sense to me that she wouldn’t call out for him.
2) We were told and shown over and over in season one how tight Sookie and Bill’s blood bond is – he knows when she is afraid and panicked. So for him to not realise that something was wrong before Sookie screamed felt very off to me.
3) So poor Lafayette has been held prisoner for weeks, was shot in the leg the day before and hasn’t received any medical treatment, and Sookie is fine with just dropping him off at home? WTF? Okay, she was worried but she should have been as harsh and unyielding with him as she was with Eric. He has a bullet wound! He’s weak already from being chained in a basement for weeks! I was shocked when Bill didn’t offer his blood, when Sookie didn’t ask Bill, because that’s exactly what should have happened. He needs to be healed! What is she thinking? Honestly. Poor Lafayette. I felt so much for him when her curled up on his couch, cuddling under the blanket and breaking down.
• So we’re supposed to assume that Maryann sent the minotaur creature after Sookie because Sookie was trying to take Tara away from her, and wasn’t falling under her spell, right? Because that’s what I got from it. The doctor stated that Sookie would die but then we see Daphne, alive, with her scratches as scars so perhaps it doesn’t kill but puts the person under Maryann’s control? Even though her scratches are healed could Maryann still have some power over her?
• The healing of Sookie was completely disgusting – most disgusting thing I’ve seen on this show yet (and that includes Long Shadow exploding on Sookie and Lafayette chewing on Royce’s leg). God, Sookie has the worst luck. Okay, she keeps surviving but with her it’s always one bad thing after another. Lafayette had a horrible time this episode as well (and for the past few weeks) but this is really his first horrible thing on the show. This is like Sookie’s... fifth.
• “If I’m never going to be safe I’d rather know what to be afraid of.” – Sookie. I love this. Yes, exactly.
• I love how mad Sookie got over Lafayette. I love that she slapped Eric across the face (which immediately reminded me of Damon/Elena), I love that she wouldn’t back off and bitched him out, I love that she didn’t back down even after he got in her face all scary like, and I love that she didn’t let Eric walk over her in the negotiations but instead pushed him even more. When she demanded an additional five thousand dollars (because she needs a driveway) I actually laughed out loud. I love how fearless she is (even as she’s afraid). I loved their little staring moment before she followed Bill out of the office.
• Of course Sookie learning about her friend and freaking out and then being demanding with him worked out completely in his favour. And yet I’m kind of surprised that Eric even entered into any negotiations with Sookie considering, as he told Bill in the previous episode, he already had a deal with Sookie that she would work for him. Yet, he doesn’t bring that up once during their conversation. Hmm. That would have given him the advantage so I can’t see why he wouldn’t have used it. Why bother negotiating with her when he could just say ‘we have a deal but I’ll throw you friend in and all expenses paid’?
• Another hmm moment for me was actually a couple of moments in one scene: Eric sitting staring at Sookie’s back, mouth open and fangs down; Eric offering to give Sookie his own blood (“Mine is much stronger. Allow me.”); and then his “Careful, you’ll over cook her.” to Bill which seemed almost concerned.
Which, speaking of, can Sookie even be ‘over cooked’? I don’t think it’s possible. I mean considering how much she took the first time this was nothing. And if vampire sperm really is blood, which I think is a logical thought considering tears, then Sookie has had a hell of a lot of V in her system over the last month and she is perfectly fine.
• I loved doctor Ludwig and her ‘fuck off’ attitude towards Eric and vampires in general, and Eric’s amusement at her attitude. I hope we get to see more of her. Eric seems to think little of humans and yet I thought I saw some respect for Ludwig and it makes me want to see more of their relationship.
