I ended up rereading my thoughts on Abby at the end of season 6 of The 100 and I had a thought.

Instead of isolating Abby from Clarke/everyone by being obsessed with Kane in order to facilitate Clarke being mind-wiped while still having Abby make more nightblood why not actually play to their relationship?

Abby's unshakable love for her daughter and willingness to do almost anything to protect her is a cornerstone of her character! She turned her husband in to the council which had a high chance of getting him killed. She destroyed the radiation chamber because she wasn't sure that it would work. She's used to doing huge morally iffy things in order to protect her daughter.

So instead of isolating her make her a part of the story. After killing Clarke Russell contrives a reason for Abby to return to the ship. Simone points out that they'll have to deal with that time bomb eventually. Russell knows but would rather put it off as long as possible. Except that Clarke is still alive and Jo learns that Abby can make nightblood. Russell is absolutely willing to give Clarke her body and use a 'willing' host instead. So Abby returns and Russell lays it all out for her. He probably gets slapped.

But this is also Abby, who loves her daughter as much as Russell loves his (and perhaps we could have gotten some interaction between them earlier on this topic.) Even though it's really not the morally right thing to do Abby agrees to make nightblood for the Primes in return for Jo vacating her daughter's body. This would have been a great conflict for Abby who is still struggling to deal with the effects of the bunker and what she facilitated there. The show could actually go into that.

Making Abby's nightblood decision to be about Clarke as opposed to Kane just works so much better for who Abby is and for her character arc.

This also could have added to Raven's storyline and her relationships with both Abby and, in absentia, her complicated feelings about Clarke. Raven would absolutely be against making nightbloods for use by the Primes (especially once she sees how it happens) but she would also understand why Abby was doing what she's doing. We'd get to see Raven struggle with Clarke being 'dead' again and having the ability to save her. For once we could have Raven struggling with one of those impossible choices Clarke keeps running into. This would be a great way to bring Abby/Raven back together. It could have led to some great Abby and Raven conspiring against the Primes together.

Also you can still have everything going to hell because Jo likes the body and it is rapidly breaking down. She would absolutely still decide to take Clarke out, cue the whole Bellamy led rescue and him escaping into the woods with her. You could also still leave Murphy's storyline intact and have him accidentally working at cross-purposes from Abby/Raven by him only getting his information from Josie and not realising what's happening with everyone else.

It just would have been a better, and more in-character, storyline for Abby.
