New World in My View

• Two things happened in this episode that have me very excited and intrigued.

First, and most of all, we have Sookie’s new ability. In the pilot she appeared to have some sort of telekinesis which she used on the chain around Mack’s throat but then she hasn’t done anything similar since. It left me a little confused. Was that her ability or not? Was it something that she couldn’t control and it surprised her as much as them? In any case I’d actually just resigned myself to Sookie not showing that power or any other ever again so this sudden ability has me pretty gleeful. Especially since I’ve been wanting Sookie to get some sort of ability that can be used offensively considering how often she’s in trouble and how much she speaks her mind. She’s aggressive but doesn’t have the power to back it up. In fact this episode gives as another example of that at the beginning of her confrontation with Maryann where she says “You don’t scare me.” and then gets slammed into a wall and had to be rescued by Bill. Again. Seriously – she needs something.

Now this weird glowy-hand power – we don’t yet have any idea what the hell it does but it didn’t actually hurt Maryann. Perhaps Maryann is just too powerful or too other for it to work on her, but it could also mean that whatever it is it isn’t offensive or a weapon in anyway. I was thinking perhaps it was like a hand of healing (what with the glowing and stuff) and that it’s how she would save Tara (... which now that I think of it would have felt very deus ex machina so I’m glad it didn’t play out that way). Hmm. Not only didn’t the light hurt Maryann she seemed pretty gleeful and amazed by it – “That was fun!” – and I wish we could have seen her face instead of Sookie’s afterwards. The sounds she made seemed shocked and perhaps a little pained at first and then it went kind of... orgasmic? Hmm. She seemed to have sensed something different about Sookie without Sookie actually doing anything. When she asked “What are you?” the first time she seemed so curious and wondering and then the second time she says it, as Sookie escapes with Bill, it’s just so full of... awe. It’s actually kind of fascinating that someone as knowledgeable and old as Maryann doesn’t know what Sookie is, thus implying that she’s never met anyone like Sookie before. I wonder if Sookie’s return is going to switch Maryann’s focus from Sam to her?

Also I loved Sookie’s “None of your business.” to Maryann’s first curious ‘what are you’.

Second, Bill going to the Queen of Louisiana made me so happy. I’ve really wanted to see more vampires and how the vampire hierarchy actually works for a long time now (uh, episode wise that is). I love her home which is exactly what I would expect from a Queen of vampires. It was stately and gorgeous and big... I really liked it. Plus there were the guards (all professional and seemingly competent) and those too are something I would expect. The fact that Bill was expected also played into that though I’m really wondering how the hell she was expecting him? Unless this is about something else? Hopefully this means that we’re going to continue to delve into vampire politics.

• So did any part of Sookie’s dream actually play out? After Godric’s death did she go down to Eric’s room to tell him or was the roof the last time they saw each other? If she did go to see him it definitely didn’t play out that way. I’m thinking that in actuality she probably went to Eric’s room and stood outside his closed door but didn’t go in because of course he was already sleeping. It’s interesting that this dream starts with comfort goes into kissing but then instead of ending in sex it goes into feeding instead. Hmm.

The kissing and the gentleness between them in this dream reminded me of them in her first dream (and stick out when compared to her other sex scenes). It ends in violence but it’s a violence that she welcomes – she looks at it straight on and accepts it (touching his teeth gently), and then invites it in (turning aside her head and baring her neck). It’s just interesting. Her dreams make me want to try to interpret them. I wonder if his is what she wished had happened – the going to comfort him at least?

• The end of the episode didn’t actually work for me. It ends with Bill looking up and then staring at shock, a close up of a (small) foot with blood dripping down it. It doesn’t work for me because it’s played all dramatically and yet we have no investment here. We don’t know the Queen, haven’t met her yet or heard anything about her, and so have no investment in her. We don’t know what’s caused Bill to be all shocked, what’s going on with the foot, and I’m vaguly curious but certainly not in a way that has me desperate to watch the next episode in order to see what happens next.

• I loved Sookie’s worry and fear for Tara. I loved her and Bull saving her even though it was a violation and wrong feeling – they were trying to save her and maybe that excuses a lot of things. I don’t think Tara is going to be complaining about the how. I do wonder if it’s going to be truly effective or if as soon as Maryann sees Tara again she’s going to be right back to where she was? I loved Sookie comforting her afterwards. I could feel Sookie’s love for Tara in the way she held her and the way she looked at her and it made me really happy.

• “I’m calling Eric.” – Sookie
“I will not turn to Eric!” – Bill.

My first thought was actually that it wasn’t him turning to Eric it was Sookie. But thinking on that – don’t vampires consider their humans theirs (I’m sure I heard that somewhere, heh) and so he would consider Sookie’s actions like his own (and that’s how other vampires would see it as well?)

• I wonder what Eric thought when he felt Sookie’s panicking/freaking out/fear in this episode? He’d better get used to it because it’s going to happen a lot. I was expecting him to show up on his own, especially since he had to be feeling Lafayette’s freaking out as well, and both of them together would surely imply something wrong in Bon Temps. He’d better show up in the next episode.

“Give me your wrist so I can heal.” – Bill. I found this fascinating. This wasn’t Bill asking, it wasn’t his usual look down and away that he does about blood. This was him demanding; him expecting blood to heal from his human. It’s the first time I can remember seeing him like that with Sookie.

“No offense Sookie but humans are shocking susceptible to just about every form of thought manipulation.” – Bill. This just amused me.

“Time the fuck out!” – Terry. First – heee. It was really funny. Second – It’s interesting that Terry cares enough about Arlene to move to protect her from harm despite how completely out of it they all were. Arlene was lost enough that she was encouraging the danger to herself but it made Terry stop and pull back. I also love how this whole thing has seemingly helped him more than hurt him – taking control, no longer losing it. It’d be nice if next season this whole will have proven to have helped him.

• I love Jason trying to take charge and save Sam but I’m curious about why he didn’t first try to sneak Sam out of the freezer, and then why the three of them didn’t immediately make a run for it?

• I am really happy that Sam has, apparently, come out to both Jason and Andy. I can’t wait to see where that goes.
