Bad Times at the El Royale Thoughts
Mar. 11th, 2020 11:50 pmI really liked it.
+ What I appreciated most about this movie was that (outside of Billy) all of the characters were sympathetic even though some of them did bad things. I found them all interesting in their own ways and wanted to know more about all of them.
+ I loved the structure of the film and how we're slowly given new information on the characters.
+ I loved Darlene. She was amazing. I haven't seen Cynthia Erivo in anything before but she was so good. Loved her singing too, beautiful voice.
+ I also loved Flynn. I was impressed with Bridges too though I've always liked him.
+ Flynn and Darlene's relationship was wonderful. They were my favourite part of the movie. I loved how they went from friendly to adversarial to co-conspirators to genuine friends over the course of the movie.
+ One of my favourite moments was actually that small one between Darlene and Miles where she sees his PTSD/trauma for the war and gently tells him that he doesn’t have to kill any more people, even though it will probably lead to her death. It such a beautiful moment of kindness in terrible circumstances.
+ Flynn and Darlene being there for Miles as he dies was also a lovely scene.
+ I loved Darlene staring Billy in the face while laying out the truth about him and then just shutting him down when he started to try and talk. "I've heard it. I don't care." Amazing! That whole monologue was A+.
+ I loved that moment at the roulette table when Flynn forgets his name. The way he laughed to himself when he couldn't remember, and the way Darlene looks at him and how lost Flynn looked was so well done.
+ Loved that little moment when Rose tells Miles her and Emily's names and Miles and Emily share this sort of 'oh jesus christ' expression.
+ I felt bad for Agent Broadbeck (and his family) that he died (and inadvertently set in motion the events that led to everything that went down) when he was only trying to help someone who he thought needed it. Going against orders to save a kidnap victim is usually the right thing to do! At the same time I can't blame Emily even though she straight up murdered Broadbeck. Considering her past history with men and violence, her protectiveness of Rose and the fact she was on the run from a crazy cult leader her over-reacting that way felt like an understandable reaction.
+ I did think Broadbent was rather foolish not to take advantage of the spying corridor more to gather more info on Emily/Rose before he broke in to play hero.
