From the Ashes
+ It is really nice to see Clarke taking a leadership position among the group again and being accepted as such. Indra and Miller being in charge of the Wonkru forces, Raven and Gaia supporting her efforts to maintain peace. All of them working together. It was so great to watch.
+ I am especially happy at the lack of snideness from Raven/Murphy towards Clarke that filled last season and that there seems to not only be a peace between Clarke and Raven (and Clarke/Murphy) but a genuine move on their parts to recover their friendship and work together. I want that so much! And yet. I really hope that the show doesn't just gloss over the issues between them. Abby's death as the instigating factor to get them to reconcile makes sense but Raven (and Murphy's) issue's with Clarke don't stem just from season 5 and I want them to actually deal with the problems between them. [Though I'll admit I will take glossing over to get them working as a team/family over the aggravation of last seasons interactions.]
+ So we have Madi de-Heda'd but drawing memories she couldn't have and playing Heda for the sake of keeping Wonkru together, Sheidheda taking over Russell's body - two worshipped as gods leaders in one, talk of the strength of faith and its loss... it'll be interesting to see how this all comes together.
+ I like that Indra, Miller and Gaia all got a lot more screen time. I think overall the episode balanced the huge cast really well.
Written from notes as I watched:
+ Oh, Bellamy. Literally one (heartbroken) word before he gets knocked out and dragged away. ... Maybe this will be good for him, he can rest and relax for awhile!
+ Seeing that modern house and then everyone having a family picnic in the back was possibly the most discombobulating scene there's ever been on this show for me. It's just so weird! The explanation works but it was such a 'wait what' moment. That said I freaking love the idea of them all living together in that house.
+ “mothers and daughters” – was interesting because, yes Abby, but also Clarke is a mother now too and I feel like that’s not actually something Raven has had time to fully acknowledge/understand? I feel like we haven't seen the delinquents really deal with that side of her? Like their anger stems a lot for her actions in season 5 and yet she did what she did to protect her child and no ones really acknowledged that. She was wrong but she did have her reasons. I doubt the show is going to revisit it but I'd love if they did.
+ Murphy complaining about Clarke taking the master bedroom – dude, you tried to kill her like a week ago, maybe dial it back. Though I think I’d have liked it if Clarke took Josephine’s room.
+ We only got Niylah in the one scene but I liked her interjecting that "we all share the clothes" when Murphy was complaining. It felt like her having Clarke's back/actively trying to keep the peace. I also loved Clarke’s side eye at her saying “to departed friends”.
+ I loved Jackson not being ready to play nice with Murphy over Abby's death.
+ I loved the exchange between Clarke/Murphy with Murphy semi-begging her "you have to believe me..." and Clarke telling him she does. It's part Clarke being ridiculously forgiving of him (he helped someone try to kill you! yet I still love it) but also part her deep denial of her emotions.
+ Madi going to school honestly seems like a terrible idea. I realise that Clarke desperately wants for Madi to have a normal life but there is a time and a place, and this isn't it. For one thing how the heck are they explaining this to Wonkru? Why would Heda, regardless of her age, go to a Sanctum school? Meanwhile why do they want Madi going to a Sanctum Prime-worshipping school anyway?
+ I really loved that little exchange between Clarke and Miller over bodyguards for Madi. Everything about that little scene was A+. It made me think of Bellamy telling Clarke way back in season 1 to keep Miller by her side. I hope it not only continues all season but that Clarke doesn't disappoint him as a leader.
+ Raven randomly bringing up ALIE is 100% foreshadowing isn't it? Could ALIE have been in the Flame (from when Clarke had both Flame and took a chip)? Perhaps she'll help defeat Sheidheda?
+ I'm loving the tensions between the four groups in Sanctum - Sanctumites, Wonkru, Eligius prisoners, Children of Gabriel - with our heroes trapped between them trying to keep the peace. I loved how this scene played out – Eligius vs Santumites, then Children of Gabriel entering and Eligius stepping back as the two of them getting into it.
+ Eligius Guy: My money is on the guys with the guns.
[Clarke walks in like a badass surrounded by Wonkru with guns.]
Eligius Guy: The other guns.
LOL. This moment reminded me so much of s2 and Clarke bracketed by Indra and Octavia breaking Emerson out of his cell. Clarke really does love making an entrance and this wasn't even the only one this episode.
+ Waking the prisoners as a workforce to create a Compound for Earthkru was just a bad idea. They are completely untrustworthy (as yet), have no loyalties (as yet) and only add to what is already a tense powder keg of a situation. Are 38 more bodies working really worth the aggravation they are sure to bring?
+ Indra being protective of Clarke, and getting in Trey's face was a nice moment.
+ I’m so glad that we're not getting Jordan straight up believing in the Primes. Him finding himself haunted by the same thing that haunted Russell - the symbol and presumably the mystery of the Anomaly - is so much more interesting.
+ Russell destroying the chip and killing Priya was not how expected that scene to end! I think this is the first Prime that Russell has killed. Poor Jordan but it's probably for the best. We're down to five chips now - Russell, Clarke, Murphy, Emori and Gabriel - and I hope they still have some part to play.
+ I liked Gabriel getting distracted from their situation to marvel over how incredible it all was.
+ I liked and am glad that Murphy is struggling with guilt over Abby's death, and it's weighing on him. Emori was absolutely right that Russell killed Abby and that he saved them all from the fire by trading nightblood (no blame here) but there really is no reasoning away him working with Josephine. He brings up helping Josie convince Abby she was Clarke but we have yet to hear from Murphy any guilt or regret over the fact that he knowingly tried to help Josie kill Clarke and I really need that addressed this season.
+ Murphy: Miss morality wants us to be Primes.
Raven: Newsflash you are Primes, that bad choice has sailed.
Ha. I did find 'miss morality' a very weird thing for Murphy to call her. It feels like it's aimed at some of the complaints from fandom against Raven last season but it doesn't feel organic coming from Murphy.
+ Russell: Why are you protecting the man who killed your mother?
Indra: Excellent question.
I love Indra. She's great this whole episode. I loved her stepping slightly in front of Clarke when Russell moved towards her. One thing that keeps failing to be addressed is that Russell didn't only kill Abby - he killed Clarke too! Just because he failed doesn't mean it doesn't count.
+ I loved Miller’s pissed off glare at Russell in this scene. I can't remember any interactions between the him and Abby and yet she was a presence he knew on the Arc and in Arcadia and especially for six years in the bunker. They knew each other, and then he fell in love with her best friend/protege, who is now devastated by her loss. I’m sure there will be no exploration of it but it was a nice background bit.
+ "We are all one." I loved Emori taking the lead and calming down the crowd. I like that she's been reading Kaylee’s journals.
+ Raven telling Clarke, all pleased, that it was her idea they play Prime and Clarke telling her good job was a nice little moment. I also really liked that when they started moving Russell out Raven was out front waiting and purposefully moved to walk beside Clarke.
+ The Miller/Raven/Murphy/Clarke/Emori bantering scene was AMAZING. It is everything I want from Earthkru. Except with snarkiness back from Murphy. Just let them be a, sometime contentious, family.
Miller: The lengths some people go to live in a castle. ... If they’re going to get murdered in their sleep better there than at the farmhouse with us.
Raven: He does have a point. I do need my eight hours.
Clarke: Okay. For now. (to Murphy) At least until they kill you.
Heh. Also I love that Emori’s reaction is a pleased smile while Murphy is very ugh fuck everything.
+ Thus far Murphy's being a bit of a downer this season. (With reason!) I feel like he and Clarke need to meet in the middle – she can give him some of her repression and ‘lets move on, everything is okay’ and she can have some of his brooding and willingness to acknowledge grief and guilt and anger, probably for the betterment of both.
+ Madi the artist just like her mom is great.
+ Madi drawing memories from past Hedas is interesting. I wonder if it will be more than left over images - dreams, visions? Perhaps it will come into play when dealing with Sheidheda. It looked like there was a Becca memory in there. I like that the Lexa memory was Wanheda kneeling to Heda scene (there were several much more awkward choices, lol!) and I wonder if it means anything that it was that scene. Is Wanheda making a comeback?
+ Ouch, Madi trying to reach out to connect with Clarke over shared grief and Clarke just not letting herself open up in return and shutting Madi down was harsh. Poor Madi. She's so worried. I do get why Clarke would initially think Madi's mom angst was about her because she did die a week ago but still. Also Madi's bio mom's fate seemed like a revelation which is weird. I'm sure Clarke even buried her. They never talked about Madi's parents? That makes no sense.
+ I loved what this episode did with Indra/Gaia/Clarke/Madi and the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters. I love how we see Indra and Gaia reacting differently to Clarke and Madi, and the conflict between them. And the differences in their relationships with Clarke herself. I really hope this season continues to explore all this.
+ "I’m glad she has you in her life." I loved Clarke acknowledging Gaia’s sacrifice and thanking her for saving Madi. It was such a lovely scene.
[It really reminded me of my potential love for this pairing and I'd be totally down for Gaia/Clarke co-parenting.]
+ "New world, same problems." Indra right as always. Basically the tagline of this show, yes.
+ ROAN!! I wasn't expecting him so it was a delightful surprise. I've missed him so much! Fingers crossed it isn't the last time.
+ "Without Bellamy who will you follow?" Oh, I hope this is Echo’s storyline this season.
+ It seems excessive to kill people who you know aren’t trying to kill you even if they did kidnap your friend.
+ "But the kind of society I want my child to grow up in doesn’t take an eye for an eye." I love that Clarke is still trying to be better. That she spends the episode trying to be the best leader she can, to be fair, to not act on her own anger and grief but to move forward into the future she wants for her people.
+ "Josephine, Simone, Priya, Russell..." I just thought that was an interesting order to the Sanctumites prayer. You'd think Russell would be first.
+ "You take a breath. Then another. That’s it." Yeah, Russell stop being such a drama queen. I do think for Clarke one of the reasons she was able to keep getting up and moving on with living was that she had someone that made her want to, which is something Russell doesn't have.
+ I loved the reveal that Clarke gave up one gun while having a second hidden away.
+ Clarke breaking down into her mother's clothes was so painful. Oh, Clarke. Her beating up Russell felt like it was a really cathartic moment for her but at the same time I know she's going to regret this when she calms down.
+ Russell being mind-wiped by Sheidheda was such an appropriate end for him. I was really surprised that they killed him off so quickly but it worked for me.
+ I wonder if Jordan, the last to have a real conversation with Russell, won't be the one to figure out Sheidheda first?
+ Letting the palace burn is a terrible idea. It's their biggest potential shelter, you can't just go to a store and pick any of the items in it (furniture, clothes, blankets/rugs) which makes the waste even greater, and the fire could very easily spread to the rest of the town. It looks very out of control.
+ Sanctum people not worrying about Bellamy/Octavia/Echo makes sense since they presumably know they're at Gabriel's researching the Anomaly but I'm surprised there was no mention from anyone about them. It felt like a weird omission.
+ It is really nice to see Clarke taking a leadership position among the group again and being accepted as such. Indra and Miller being in charge of the Wonkru forces, Raven and Gaia supporting her efforts to maintain peace. All of them working together. It was so great to watch.
