The Garden

Good episode.

+I loved Octavia's letter to Bellamy. I loved that in the end she wanted to tell him that she finally understand all he did for her and to say thank you. I love that she did spend so much time fighting to try and go back to him.

+ One little issue I did have was that we got Octavia tearfully desperate to tell Bellamy she understands - while being willing to leave young Hope (something Bellamy would never do.) They didn't know the specifics of how the time difference worked but she knew it was significant and despite her optimism she didn't know that she could get back during Hope's childhood. I rather wish that instead of being forced by Diyoza to stay Octavia had made that choice herself because of her love of Hope (and the understanding it brought her of Bellamy's choices.)

+ I'm very happy that Octavia finally got her own peaceful time jump and family. Clarke and Bellamy got theirs between seasons 4 and 5 while she got the horror that was Blodreina so this feels very deserved.

+ I loved the parallel of Octavia putting Hope 'under the floor' to protect her.

+ I LOVED Diyoza's expression when she saw the message in the bottle, when she realised that Octavia's inability to let go of her brother (which ironically that letter was about) had lead these armed strangers to their peaceful home, and the way she has a second to deal with it and then immediately tries to protect Octavia. That was A+.

+ I admit I was a little disappointed that Diyoza/Octavia didn't become a romance or at least a friends-with-benefits situation. They were really shippy last season but felt very platonic this episode. All the same I really loved them and their little made family this episode. I feel like this is going to be the only flashback to them during that decade which is a shame because I want to see more.

+ Specifically I wanted more on "There was a darkness in me. Diyoza helped me past that darkness." Considering how quickly Octavia managed to deal with that darkness last season I was sure that she had already done it all during her time in the Anomaly and retained that even with her amnesia. So vindicated! But while I enjoyed the happy family what I really wanted was some of Octavia dealing with that darkness. Even one scene!

I do like that it was a combination of having a child of her own to love and protect plus isolation in a peaceful place with no fighting plus Diyoza (who understands inner darkness and doing horrible things and thus could empathise while also being practical and who was from a time with therapists all of which made her a pretty good person to effectively help Octavia) that got Octavia to finally deal with her many traumas and find some inner peace.

+ I loved the title and the call back to Diyoza's "two snakes in a garden" to Octavia and how differently it plays out this time.

+ There were a lot of points of similarity between Diyoza and Clarke in season 5 and this episode gave us that again with Diyoza living in her own version of Eden with her daughter, except she gets a companion in Octavia.

Now we also get Clarke = Octavia as an easy comparison too. It's interesting how they both found some measure of peace in isolation and being a parent. Except Clarke's peace was tentative. She never really dealt with her trauma so much as she repressed it and was only able to keep that equilibrium because she was isolated. In this case Octavia repeats her situation but with a better outcome because Diyoza is there too. Diyoza who was able to help her deal with her trauma and guilt, and find the ability to move on from it. We see how positive this ends up being when Octavia returns from the Anomaly, even with her amnesia.

Hmm. I wonder if this could be a theme this season? Of repeating the past in a slightly different way except this time ending better? Improving on the past, fixing the mistakes in the redo? A part of me loves the idea, the rest of me is going 'that is way too hopeful for The 100'.

We have another situation brewing that reminds me of the past even with it's differences - Clarke vs Russell/Sheidheda. In season 3 Clarke let her enemy Emerson live in her effort to push 'blood must not have blood'. He returned and killed Sinclair, almost killed our delinquents and Clarke ended up killing him with the Flame. This time we have Clarke losing her emotional control and deciding to kill Russell for basically 'blood must have blood' reasons.

Actually another parallel I can see: Echo's desperate and single-minded search for Bellamy sort of reminds me of Finn in season 2. I definitely hope hers goes better than that!

+ As with Madi in season 5, I am super interested in the stories and tales that Octavia (and Diyoza) told Hope about Octavia's people and their history. I genuinely want an episode with Hope and Madi (& Jordan) sitting down and just sharing the stories their moms/aunt told them about Earthkru. It'd be fascinating to see where they match and where they don't. What did Hope learn vs what did Madi learn vs Jordan? They obviously all got the gospel of Bellamy, lol. But I want to see Hope's take on our main characters as formed via stories told by Octavia. All the parental figures had their blind spots and issues and I am so curious about this!

Thus far we get Echo who is smart, brave, sensible, and a good fighter. That Octavia didn't like. Also Octavia tells ten year old Hope that Echo stabbed her and kicked her off a cliff so that tracks. Especially since Echo absolutely did not kick Octavia off a cliff. I'm going to put that down to Octavia's faulty recollection.

+ "Before you know it I could be back with Bellamy, Clarke and Madi."

I find this so utterly fascinating. Bellamy, of course. But Clarke and Madi? Why the hell would they be Octavia's second and third choices here? I'd have guessed Indra and maybe Niylah. Madi perhaps because she's around Hope's age (the only on who is). Were Clarke and Madi some of Hope's favourite 'characters'? God, I want to know what Octavia told Hope about them! I want to know why Clarke is the second person that she wants to bring home with her. Nostalgia and sentimentality? The absolute certainty that Clarke would be an asset and not a danger in Skyring? Her time spent led her to understanding not only Bellamy but also Clarke and it changing how she looked back on the past?

... oh wait. Could this be a part of Octavia's guilt and desire for redemption? She was a large part of what destroyed Clarke and Madi's peaceful home (and also she tried to kill them) and now she wants to bring them to a new peaceful 'Eden' to replace what she took from them? I like this idea.

Also I just love Octavia choosing Clarke and Madi along with Bellamy, as if they're her family too. It pleased me.

+ Hope asking 'And Murphy' leads me to believe that Murphy was her favourite which I find delightful. Fingers crossed! (I want that Hope/Murphy reveal scene.)

+ I find it interesting how the ‘new’ generation – Madi, Jordan and Hope – grew up in very isolating situations with only one or two people around. I don't know that it means anything but it's an interesting connection.

+ I feel so sad for poor Hope. As with Madi she only spent a few months alone before someone new came into her life - except unlike Madi she returned to find him dead. What I really want is Hope/Madi friendship now even if Hope is over five years older.

+ ‘Living alone once she buries me’ - I get what Diyoza is saying here. I mean she had an up close look at exactly how this goes with the whole of season 5 with Clarke/Madi/Eden. I probably wouldn't want the volatile collection of Wonkru and maybe Eligius and whoever else invading my peaceful paradise. Even Earthkru are mostly strangers who spent most of the time she knew them as enemies/reluctant allies and who didn't fight to prevent her from being abandoned pregnant in a dangerous alien world. So I get it. But all the same this all stays true even if Octavia stayed. Regardless of how it goes Hope will end up alone on the planet at some point in her life.

Also Diyoza not wanting to train Hope to fight makes complete sense. But considering the worlds they came from maybe a little too optimistic on her part.

+ Young Hope wanting to help Octavia get back to help Bellamy was very sweet. I loved their relationship.

+ I'm very curious about where all these planets are in relation with each other. Especially Bardo in relation to the black hole. Beta seems to be the closest and thus has an extreme time difference but considering that Octavia came back through the Anomaly so quickly there has to be a slighter time difference on Bardo, right? If it was completely in sync with Sanctum there is no way Octavia could have come back through like 10 seconds after she went in.

+ As with the previous episode I liked the Hope/Echo/Gabriel plot but I just don't have a lot to say about it.

+ I’ve really been enjoying Gabriel this season. His genuine nerdy interest in everything anomaly related is great, him admitting his crush on Becca was cute and I loved him completely ignoring Hope and Echo’s anxious desire to fast-forward to the relevant parts of the mind drive because he just wanted to watch it all, ha.

+ So faith is definitely a theme then. Not sure how I feel about these new humans also being from a cult. Is there something about mind drives that make people pretend to be gods and others want to worship them? The Disciples, the Primes, Heda.

+ So we can add Josephine and maybe Colin's mind drives to the pile floating around. That shot of the smashed viewer + Colin's mind-drive to Gabriel's mind-drive scar to Echo felt deliberate. I wonder if she could end up with one? Nothing so far has come from her being made a nightblood which feels like a loose thread.

+ I hope that the show continues to give us a new past character every episode. Roan, Becca...
