Agents of Shield 7x07 Thoughts
Jul. 16th, 2020 11:07 pmThe Totally Excellent Adventures of Mack and the D
+ This was an amazing episode for Deke. He refused to give up on Mack even in the face of being ignored and disdained; he took care of/helped kid Mack and his brother and was involved in their lives; he saved Coulson; he continued to be a SHIELD agent and kept track of their enemy and formed his own branch of SHIELD to act against Sibyl. Okay he also fell back on his 'steal ideas from the future to enrich himself' thing and was a little goofy but overall he was great.
+ With that title I was a little disappointed that we didn't get more adventures with Mack and Deke. I was expecting something more like them working together to fight Sibyl, Deke annoying the crap out of Mack but slowly them building a close relationship with Mack comin to trust and genuinely care for Deke over the course of the time they were trapped. Alas.
+ I was surprised that Mack wasn't involved in the lives of his younger self and brother. I really loved that Deke was. How the heck did that even come about? A big brother situation? It's obvious from his talk with Mack that it's not just financial (supplies/toys, a new car) but that he's very much a part of the boys lives and knows them really well. Which makes him presumably eventually leaving the timeline really sad - first they lose their parents and then close family friend?
+ I'm glad that Mack was able to have the time to deal with what happened and recover but I also felt him falling into despair was a little much? It would have worked better for me if he'd been in despair for a much smaller amount of time (a couple months at most) and then all the rest of time had been him working with Deke, leading this new SHIELD group against Sibyl, helping his younger self.
+ This exchange was hilarious:
Mack: Wait, didn’t you tell me that dude was shady?
Deke: Yeah, but that was before I found out he had a steady job.
Mack: Doing what?
Deke: Selling coke.
LOL. Mack's expression was a delight. And I really loved that he remembered what Deke said about Cricket, what had to be months earlier, because it shows he was listening to Deke. That said while it made me laugh I just can't buy that Deke wouldn't know what coke was.
+ It was nice to see Coulson. I didn't believe for a second he wouldn't survive. I loved this line: "And not a bunch of 1s and 0s trapped in a digital hell? I’d like to think so, but admittedly there’s been some real soul searching here." Super understandable.
+ "They aren’t sycophants. They have my back. And they won’t give up on me when the going gets tough!" Touché! I really liked that Deke created a new group for himself, and that they genuinely liked him and he liked them. It's clear they were a family. And I especially appreciate that Deke got this considering how long he's been searching for belonging, and how he hasn't felt a part of the team.
That said, I was left rather 'eh, whatever' and Deke's shield agent bandmates. None of them made any significant impression on me.
+ I'm glad the show is finally acknowledging that we're dealing with different timelines at this point.
