I loved the Queen talking to Shin about Chae-kyung – her empathy for her and attempt to (gently) intercede with Shin on her behalf, her non-judgementalness of Shin and her encouragement/advice to him over their relationship.
Still absolutely loving Chae-kyung and her friendship with her maids, as well as their background reactions.
Shin continues to go between jerkass [his behaviour over her cake] and kind [getting her on the trip with the Queen Mother].
I can’t believe Shin met Hyo-rin in a public place even with a ‘disguise’ of glasses and hat. Dude. I’m surprised that we haven’t gotten more fall out over the photos. His dad didn’t even say anything about it.
”I just want it all back in one piece.” – ie: he doesn’t just want the throne he also wants the contracted wife? He feels rather all over the place as far as what he wants. I feel like he’s not even sure himself.
Yul’s not the only one all over the place. Shin starts the episode saying he’s planning on stepping down in a few years because he doesn’t want to be king (and there’s a better option now) and then acts rather the opposite for the rest of the episode. You’d think if he wanted to step down he’d welcome the realisation that Yul might want the job and yet things are very tense between them.
I liked their exchange over what their first acts as king would be. Of the two Yul's was pointedly selfish I feel while Shin's felt like the more noble act. I agree with both.
I found Yul's assertion that 'arranged marriages are the beginning of this tragedy'. I don't think he's talking about their situation because that's not the beginning. Were Yul's parents an arranged marriage while Hwa-Yong and the current King were in love?
Shin’s scene with Hwa-young was interesting because thus far he’s seemed very removed from all of her machinations (while being the target) so him showing awareness and pointedly warning her - "the greatest enemies are always the closet but for that I’m also well-prepared" - took me by surprise.
Hwa-young is certainly a piece of work. We knew this but her using her past suicide attempt to fake Yul out as punishment was deeply cruel. Poor Yul.
The fact that they were going to give Yul the title of King, even as only a ceremonial one, while there's another King on the throne makes no sense to me. Yul's suggestion of royal prince made so much more sense!
It would have been nice to have the Queen step up after the King went away to rest. Or if there’d at least be the implication that she was going to help.
