Episode 15
+ This was a good episode for Shin/Chae-kyung. My favourite scene was actually the little one in his bedroom when she brought in the paper with the kiss to complain to him. I loved how she casually flopped down beside him and rested her legs on his. I liked how light the atmosphere was and how casual and pleasant it was. I also loved their confrontation in the opening scene. Chae-kyung standing up for herself was so great and I loved both of the hugs.
+ The dinner scene was fun. The Great Queen Mother continues to be lovely and the exchange between her and Chae-kyung about how she's made the GQM more humorous was really cute. I loved the Queen's smile at their exchange. It wasn't a polite smile but one of genuine amusement which was so nice to see. Then there was all the (barely) subtext happening between Shin, Yul and Chae-kyung that I enjoyed.
On the one hand, Yul's unrepentant declaration that he does indeed want to marry someone 'like' the crown princess, in fact he wants to marry soon to the one he's fallen for amused me in it's boldness. The 'Shin: I hope it works out. / Yul: It will' exchange was great. On the other hand, Chae-kyung has been super clear that she only sees him as a friend and loves her husband and his unwavering refusal to accept that is only going to end in heartbreak. He's not very good at accepting his place as only her friend.
Episode 16
+ The episode opening on Shin and Chae-kyung frolicking on a beach felt really abrupt and kind of weird even if they were getting along well in the last episode. But I did love everything else about their trip. As seems to becoming a theme it's the tiny moments I love best and the little scene of them in the car hiding from the rain was great. It was soft and sweet and he was so clearly charmed by her. I loved it. Chae-kyung regretting taking Shin shopping was adorable and I liked them cooking together. Him pulling her into his arms while she slept was nice too.
+ "Everyone's unhappy because it took us so long to meet." Oh, Yul. I mean he's not entirely wrong. If he'd returned and been named Crown Prince before the marriage things probably would have been better. But that's not what happened and you can't go back.
Yul using this situation to try and manipulate Chae-kyung into divorcing Shin was not surprising. I wonder if he truly believed what he was saying about Shin preferring Hyo-rin?
I felt for him when Chae-kyung went after Shin because she refused to let him carry the burden alone - my first thought was 'just like Yul'. Shin and Yul are similar in that way. And then of course he immediately wonders 'what about me/my hurt over you'. Hyo-rin at least has someone manipulating her feelings of hope/love what's motivating Yul in the face of Chae-kyung's true feelings? The feeling of 'what if' and bitterness over what could have been?
Chae-kyung is very focused on her own feelings and seems to live in a place of denial about Yul's love for her. She avoids acknowledging it, even I suspect to herself, as much as possible. He said to keep being his friend, to let him be her confidant, and she's taking him at her word. But I think that's just making it worse even though she is very clear about her priorities.
+ Meh to the twist of Hyo-rin attempting suicide. She's being manipulated hard by a master but it's still frustrating to watch. The fact that she attempted it at school makes me think that in her despair she was using it as a last ditch effort to try and guilt him back to her.
+ What I really hate about the attempted suicide is the way Shin kept being blamed by everyone for it. People seem to be conflating two different things - her being in the hospital 'because' of Shin and her being in the hospital 'over' for Shin. The former isn't true and the latter isn't his fault. She turned his proposal down, he's married, he broke things off after Thailand. I do appreciate his sister saying it wasn't his fault.
+ I was really frustrated by Shin not defending himself to the king and then going to see Hyo-rin at her hotel room at the end.
+ Is the King being so hard on Shin because of his own past?
+ Shin telling Chae-kyung they should stay together "until I decide to let you go" made me roll my eyes so hard. How about no.
+ For people who are supposed to always have guards with them these royals certainly run around a lot without them.
