Shin really is his own worst enemy. Dude. Just - dude. I can't believe he blamed Chae-kyung for getting him in trouble. I can't believe he said "Look at what you did", that dick. It was his idea! He could at least take responsibility for it going so wrong. She was right to call him out on it. I'm so glad that she's doing that now instead of just sadly going off alone.
Yikes, the Queen was harsh! I think it comes from a place of over-identification where the Queen was in that exact place 20 years ago and knows just how hard it is, except instead of being supportive she's being tough. Or at least that's how it seems. I hope we get more into her motivations with regards to Chae-kyung.
It was definitely a very pointed contrast to see Shin sitting outside the room not trying to protect Chae-kyung from being scolded as compared to Yul twice speaking up for her in similar situations.
Yul following Chae-kyung to make sure she was okay and then immediately opening up to her emotionally and being quietly supportive was - well, pretty typical! Lovely and expected. He's like the opposite of her emotionally stunted husband.
While I did love Yul gently touching her face at the same time I can't help but sigh. His unwanted gestures aren't better than Shin's just because they're gentle over Shin hauling her around. Give her some space!
I have to say I'm rather impressed with the characterisation of both Yul and Shin as far as their emotional landscape and how they react to people goes. Considering both their pasts and how they've lived the last 14 years both their personalities make so much sense. That's great.
Yul opening up about his mother's attempted suicide and his feelings of hurt and fear over it felt rather deliberately wielded. Around Hyo-rin's attempt it could have made sense for him to bring it up but here, when she's once again straight-up telling him that they are not going to happen, it feels like him using his emotions and sad past in order to keep her.
It's been an interesting switch to where Yul's now telling her to leave Shin and the palace. Has he changed his plan and now doesn't want to be king? Or is he putting her well-being ahead of what he wants now?
I liked Hyo-rin encouraging Shin to open up emotionally with Chae-kyung and that she finally seems ready to move on. She's really has had a turn around in perspective. I guess a combination of her attempted suicide and having to deal with it emotionally (her lowest point) + her talk with the Queen (shame for her behaviour and a new way forward) + Shin straight-up telling her that he chooses Chae-kyung over her is all she needed.
