Saved by the Bell Season 1 Thoughts
Mar. 20th, 2021 06:51 pmI liked it.
+ I love the whole idea of the Bayside kids still living in the original Bayside universe vs the Douglas kids coming in and being very WTF about it. I really loved the wtf reactions. There were some great ones. It also mapped surprisingly well onto rich/privileged kids vs poor/underprivileged kids.
+ The big issue here is of course our original cast. I get where they were going with it and actually it worked really well. In the real world these are believable places those characters could have ended up. But it still feel like they got flanderised and it's really not where I wanted these characters to end up. I think I was having the most issue with Zach because I just don't remember him being as dumb as he came off here. Actually this was probably my number 1 issue - Zach felt very OOC. I appreciated that Jessie and AC both went on journeys (dumping her terrible husband, letting go of high school) but I also would rather a future where they didn't end up back at school. Zach/Kelly and Jessie/AC falling out of contact is too sad! It's super believable but I don't like it. I'm choosing to believe this is an AU. In the AU I liked Jessie and AC's continuing friendship, that Zach/Kelly are still very happily together and supportive of each other, and that they all renewed their friendship. Also that apparently Jessie and Lisa are still (long distance) friends.
+ I found it pretty amusing and I liked the tone of the show but it did hit my embarrassment squick a fair amount.
+ The casting of Mac Morris as Zach's son was excellent. In general I really liked the whole cast/set of characters. My favourite relationships were probably Lexie/Mac, Aisha/Daisy and Lexie/Devante.
+ Going in I felt like Screech was such an obviously perfect person to be the Principal but I ended up really loving Principal Toddman. The actor is very much a That Guy actor and I find him really likeable. His speech to Daisy in the first episode was really great.
+ I loved the one episode gag about the seniors looking (increasingly) old and Aisha being freaked out about it.
+ AC talking to Mac and Jaime about not fighting over girls and then laughingly pointing out that he and his best friend fought over a girl who hey happened to be Mac's dad and mom, and how he got a new girlfriend, who hey happened to be Jaime's mom, amused me a lot.
+ I really liked the relationship between AC and Aisha. I do wish the show had done more with AC and Jaime especially since it appears to be going in a AC/Jessie end game direction.
+ I liked that it was Daisy that was given Zach's time stopping power but I feel like the show should have used it more. I also hope they have a scene next season with both Daisy and Zach using it at cross-purposes or them both using it having unexpected side effects.
+ I absolutely thought Zach wouldn't show up at the walk-out and then when he did I figured that he would do the exact opposite and say he was sending all the Douglas kids back (showing he doesn't listen to his son/know about his life) so I was very pleasantly surprised that it didn't go in that direction. I also like that he decided to do the right thing and that Kelly showed up to seduce him into doing the right thing if he hadn't already decided that already. And that Daisy was right with her idea.
+ I'm very annoyed that Jaime and Aisha broke up because he liked her more, sorry 'loved her', and she didn't 'love' him but just enjoyed being with him (completely reasonable!) and then by the end of the episode he is kissing Lexi. At least have them break up for a different reason!
+ "I was going to say buy two tickets and go with them but let’s do your thing." I really loved Mac’s smile after he said this. In the end it's 'revealed' when Lexi confronts him that he went along with her scheme because he missed best friend Jamie and was jealous of the time he was spending with Aisha but then nothing comes of that. We don't get any scene between him and Jaime, they don't noticeably spend more time together. I was actually thinking that he was doing it for Lexi because he had already known about her crush on Jaime because she's also his best friend and he knows her. That would have worked so much better.
