Episode 16

It was a very lovely final episode, with many wonderful character moments and was a good end to the series.

+ I was really expecting a time jump in the final minutes to show us a glimpse of the new future Gwang-ho's changes would create and then the show didn't do it at all. One last surprise. I'll admit I am disappointed because I want to see those characters we love again and get to see what their lives are like but I can also understand why the writers chose to leave the story where they did. And I appreciate the couple scenes of the past they showed us.

+ Seeing Gwang-ho and Yeon-sook happy with Yeon-ho was lovely. The fact that kid Sun-jae was there, and in context seemed like that was a common occurrence, was even better. I love that Gwang-ho made sure to keep Sun-jae a part of his life, and to be there for him.

+ I loved that 2016!Gwang-ho's name wasn't a coincidence but came about because Gwang-ho stopped pursuit of a suspect to help a pregnant woman and ended up saving the baby's life. I also loved that Sung-shik was back to working for Gwang-ho. I'm so happy for Sung-shik that he got Gwang-ho back and that he'll get a wonderful thirty years to work side by side with him.

From those scenes what I get is: when Gwang-ho returned he managed to get a police team put together again (Sung-shik's presence) and took down Mok. (Saving so many lives in the future.) He kept in contact with Sun-jae's father and Sun-jae became an important part of his and Yeon-sook's life.

I'm sure that Yeon-sook doesn't die. Jae-yi grows up as Yeon-ho, loved and cherished by her parents. Sung-shik's trauma over losing Gwang-ho is blunted by getting him back so much sooner. I think there is a good chance that Sun-jae will still become a cop - but this time because of Gwang-ho. Will Yeon-ho follow Jae-yi into her career? That is the thing I'm least certain about. Would Gwang-ho even want to encourage her in that direction?

I'd like to think that Gwang-ho would take his future knowledge to make some smart investments but I'm doubtful, lol.

I think my biggest question is: will any of them remember the previous timeline? Or will everything be overwritten by this new one Gwang-ho is creating? Dr. Mok simply remembered the change in his memory, he realised that his memory was changing, but then it was a short memory that apparently affected nothing in how he proceeded in his life. Hmm.

+ Here's why despite getting frustrated with him Gwang-ho is great: his immediate assertion that it's not over despite catching Dr. Mok and that they needed to tell the victims families that their killer was caught. The subsequent montage of the detectives telling family members was very affecting, both sad and touching.

+ I loved Gwang-ho and Sun-jae's goodbye. I loved Gwang-ho telling him that he was happy to meet him again and thanking him for growing up to be a wonderful man. I loved how emotional Sun-jae got and him turning away to cry but trying to cover it. Also Gwang-ho's "I wanted to remember your face" answer for why he was staring got me right in the heart.

+ Jae-yi making a homemade dinner for Gwang-ho was nice. I loved her finally calling him 'papa' as he's walking away.

+ Gwang-ho stopping to let Sun-jae be the one to cuff and arrest Gwang-ho was really sweet and thoughtful of him.

+ I liked Sun-jae defending Gwang-ho to his dad and telling him that Gwang-ho did keep his promise to find her killer. I love that giving Gwang-ho credit was important to him.

+ I loved that when Sun-jae came out from meeting his dad Gwang-ho was waiting there with flowers to take to his mother. I loved their moment of silent communication.

+ I liked Jae-yi ending her class with her father's words, with the new understanding she'd learned from him.

+ I loved the entire team gathering to pay their respects to the young Gwang-ho, to thank him, and to lay him to rest with his grandmother.

+ I love that even this time when Gwang-ho tried to be all protective dad Sun-jae ignored him and Jae-yi went along with it.

+ The team dinner was lovely. I liked Gwang-ho's efforts to try and comfort them and their inconsolable sadness at losing him.

+ I kind of love that Jae-yi using herself as bait is what got both serial killers captured.

+ I thought it might feel hollow, even pointless, seeing the future timeline catch Mok if Gwang-ho ended up returning home to catch him in the past but actually I think that's how it would have felt if we'd seen it the other way around. We needed to see our future characters come together and take Mok down, to succeed, for Sun-jae to get answers. It felt perfect how it was done.

+ Gwang-ho keeping up the whole 'no dating my daughter' shtick even considering how much he does love Sun-jae and respects him and especially after confessing that he's not happy about leaving his daughter alone was annoying. There's an obvious solution to not leaving her alone right in front of you! As he was leaving he finally gave his blessing by telling Sun-jae to look after her and I loved that, but it was also too little too late. It should have happened earlier in the episode.

+ I waited for almost the entire series for Gwang-ho's murder, cover-up and our Gwang-ho taking his place to affect things and then it doesn't! At all! The hell? Dr. Mok even threatened to reveal everything, which could have caused serious issues for the team, and then for some reason never actually does it. Why wouldn't he as a way to throw them into chaos? I'm disappointed tbh.

+ Okay, I judged a little harshly in that they didn't miss that Jae-yi would be a target. On the other hand, this is almost worse. Setting a trap with her as bait is good but the way they did it left me going 'seriously?!' She almost died again! He strangled her again! Dudes. Even if they weren't sure he was there someone should have still gone in with her, say Gwang-ho, in case he was and to clear the rooms if he wasn't. He then could have very obviously left for his own apartment. And then they could lay in wait and nab him going in before he hurt her again. Sigh.

+ I'm a little sad that changing the future is likely going to cut Dean Hong from Yeon-ho's life. She and Jae-yi were clearly so close and their relationship was very rewarding for both of them. I don't think Gwang-ho even realises it so it's not a relationship he could introduce Yeon-ho to. I wish we'd had a scene between Gwang-ho and Dean Hong where he got to meet the woman who protected and cared for his daughter for so long, and she got to (unknowingly) meet the person who has made Jae-yi so happy and at peace with herself.
