Arabella
This episode went quite different from the book. I find it so interesting the changes and moving around of events the show did with this episode. Norrell not being behind the rumours of Strange having caused Arabella's death, on one hand, but Norrell actively refusing to act to bring her back causing a huge rift between him and Strange, on the other. The rumours gaining such steam that Strange actually gets arrested under suspicion of murdering Arabella! That surprised me. And then he gets the madness idea from Grant and escapes from his cell. He is in such a different place entering into this next phase of the story than he was in the book.
Strange spending the week after 'Arabella's' death desperately searching for ways to bring her back and begging Norrell's help instead of accepting it really does make so much sense. It actually works better for me than Strange's reaction in the book in some ways. His overwhelming grief and desperation were really well done.
I love that in this version Arabella being taken by Thistledown Gentleman involved tricking Strange into unknowingly accepting the moss oak replacement and thus accepting the trade of the two.
I knew what was coming but I think it would have worked better if the show hadn't shown the replacement Arabella in the moss oak and Arabella being driven away by Stephen. It would have left a bit of mystery about what was going on and could have been shown in a flashback after her death.
I really liked Segundus and Mr. Honeyfoot actually investigating Lady Pole's words/the truth of her situation and working with her to figure out what is happening to her. That was great.
I love that Lady Pole refuses to stop fighting for her freedom. I loved her desperately calling for Arabella at the ball.
I was less of a fan of Stephen being involved in Arabella's kidnapping. I like his relationship with Lady Pole but overall I feel like the show isn't doing quite as well with Stephen and Stephen/Thistledown Gentlemen relationship which makes me sad because they were so great in the book.
I'm enjoying Norrell and Childermass. His loyalty isn't really addressed in the book and I'd love if the show gave us a reason for it. I'm also enjoying Childermass vs Lascelles. I like how they're placed as an angel and a devil on Norrell's shoulder fighting to influence him. I loved that it was Childermass who Norrell addressed on what to do about Strange's letter. Childermass was right I think that Norrell was asking what he should do to help.
I really liked what the show did with Lascelles and his relationship with Norrell in this episode.
I'm sad they cut Jonathan moving the whole town to the America though I understand why they did. But it was a piece of awesome magic on Strange's part and would have been really fun to see. It also had one of my favourite Wellington moments.
I love that it was Grant who came to rescue Strange from jail (though who else could it be?) and his absolute belief in Strange was great.
