Witch King by Martha Wells
Oct. 13th, 2023 03:45 pmI really enjoyed it. It's my favourite book by her.
+ I enjoyed both sections of the story. I'd absolutely read a sequel. But what I'm most interested in is the past and Kai/Bashasa and seeing more of how they brought everyone together and how Kai/Ziede/Tahren became such an unbreakable unit. I really enjoyed the whole escape/revolt at the Summerhalls.
+ I liked the world-building. Everything with the demons in particular and also expositors.
+ I loved Kai. All the characters were pretty great. Ziede, Bashasa, Tahren, Dahin, and Sanja. Salatel and Ramad too.
+ I am very into Kai/Bashasa. I want more of their story. I loved Kai telling Ramad that he forgot what Kai was - not an immortal demon prince but Bashasa's immortal demon prince. I loved the tent scene and Kai putting Bashasa to bed. The confrontation at the end was great - from Bashasa pulling Kai onto his horse, to Kai taking multiple arrows to protect him and forcing himself not to flinch and play the role, to their final scene with Kai accepting Bashasa's request to help him unburn the world and Bashasa taking his hand. I love them.
+ I liked the Kai/Ramad confrontation with the reveals that Kai (and the others) were betrayed by Ramad and Bashat and then the reveal that Kai had betrayed them five years before and had already engineered the fall of The Rising World as an empire. I liked that Ramad wasn't angry. In fact his first words were that he and Bashat betrayed Kai for nothing.
+ I got the impression from the blurb that a lot more time had passed between Kai being put in the tomb and his awakening. Hundreds of years in time so it threw me when it was only a year.
