True Detective: Night Country
May. 18th, 2024 12:02 pmFinally got around to finishing the series. I liked it.
I didn't know much about the show except that it was a detective series so I honestly wasn't expecting how hard the show went on the supernatural. The show doesn't give any exact answers but there is just too much not explainable (the tongue, the visions/ghosts, the voices/footsteps leading to the right places, how the Tsalal scientest died etc) for there not to be something supernatural.
The biggest question left at the end is what exactly happened to Evangeline Siqiññaatchiaq Navarro? Did she die when she walked out onto the ice, and now her ghost visits Liz? (And Liz having gone on a journey of acceptance can now see her.) Did she survive but has decided to abandon her previous life? The house Liz was in at the end wasn't one we've seen before but she seemed very at home there. It being Evangeline's new home that Liz visits is very possible. I'm fine not getting a definitive answer either way.
I loved the end reveal that the Tsalal deaths were caused by a group of women taking justice into their own hands and getting revenge for Annie's murder. They weren't wrong to be skeptical that they'd get any true legal justice if they went to the police. The whole sequence of them storming Tsalal Station was A+, loved it. Good for them. Love that Liz and Evangeline chose to drop it.
I also liked the contrast between this mob of motivated women vs the earlier mob of men that went out hunting Clark. The situations are different but the contrast was still stark.
I do wish we'd seen a little more of these women during the investigation because we know almost nothing about them.
I really appreciate that the show let both Danvers and Navarro be gruff, rude, standoffish and/or unlikeable. I found both, even Liz, to also be very understandable and kind.
I liked Liz and Evangeline's complicated often antogonistic relationship and loved where they ended up. I loved Liz calling her "my partner". It was a very 'you've come so far' moment. Them saving each other, taking care of each other, having each others backs - all excellent.
From the first episode I figured that Liz demoted Evangeline to protect her. Considering the volatile emotions around the mine and Annie's death with Evangeline's determination to never back down plus Liz's emotional impairment it seemed obvious. I think that still probably was a part of it.
Liz choosing to cover Wheeler's murder and then being willing to drop Annie's case in order to protect Evangeline was great and really showcased her true feelings. I also like how it showed how both of them choose vengeance justice over legal justice and how that eventually tied into the end.
The mentor/mentee relationship between Liz and Peter was my favourite. Liz is a hardass and expects far too much from Peter but she clearly adores him and thinks he's an amazing cop and is trying to make sure he stays like that. Peter looks up to her and honestly seems to adore her back. Hank implies something sexual with his Mrs. Robinson crack but I didn't really see that. Just a very deep loyalty between two people who consider the other a good cop and a good person and who genuinely really care for each other. I loved them.
I thought the Liz/Leah conflict was very believably done. I got where both of them were coming from and how they were miscommunicating. Leah wants to make life better for her people, she wants to get in touch with her roots, she's young and passionate. Liz wants to protect Leah. She's a cop, she knows the death rate among indiginous women, she knows the danger Leah is potentially putting herself in. Annie being a prime example. Even her reaction to the potential face tattoo is about protecting Leah. Trying to stop her from marking herself as different (even though her looks already do that). Leah wants affection, verbal confirmation that Liz cares. Liz is a very closed off person who no longer knows how to reach out like that to people. But I think it's clear how much they care for each other so I was happy that the end had a reconciliation. More then a reconcilation even with Liz actually laughing and talking with Leah, them communicating and enjoying being with each other. It was nice to see.
Leah getting mad/offended when Liz had her put in a cell after she was involved in the protest/attacked a cop made me shake my head. It made me agree with Liz's decision. Leah had been getting special treatment the entire show with Liz stepping between her and any consequences for her actions and that frankly wasn't helpful to Leah in the longrun.
Peter killing Hank was definitely the biggest shock of the show.
Hank was a terrible person, corrupt, abusive towards his son. But all the same I felt really bad for him when he was waiting at the airport with so much hopeful happiness and then the crushing sadness/despair when he was cleaning up the welcoming he'd left for her. And yes his online "girlfriend" was so clearly a catfishing scheme which was pathetic and sad, but his reaction afterwards was just sad. Also if I'm going to say nice things Hank really did have a nice voice.
The very worst thing Hank did, imo, was lifting his gun at Liz. Based on what he said he knew that it would provoke Peter into shooting him. I think he hoped that Peter would choose him over Liz but I also he knew there was a chance he wouldn't. He basically committed suicide by son rather than face the consequences of his actions which is just so shitty and cruel towards Peter. To leave Peter to live with that for the rest of his life. And what if they hadn't covered it up? He might have taken Peter's career/life down with him. Ugh, the worst.
Why would Peter take a head shot instead of at least trying to wound his father? A gunshot to the torso would still have a good chance of killing him but he could also possibly survive. I gues a torso shot could also giving him the chance of shooting Liz and Peter in that split second decision wasn't willing to take that chance?
I loved how they tied Hank's death back to the story of how Peter went under the ice as a child and Hank had to break the ice to get him back out. And then afterwards to hide Hank's body it's Peter who sends him under the ice.
I was pleased that Peter appeared to be back home at the end. Hopefully Liz's new attitude means she's let up on him a bit.
Qavvik was an absolute sweetheart. Just such a kind and generous person. And I'm happy that Evangeline has him in her life.
I found Rose very likable. There's something so calm and unshakeable about her that draws you in. I loved her bluntness. Loved her friendship with Evangeline too.
The shot of Liz falling into the water while trying to save 'Holden' was beautiful.
When they taped Annie's death sceams to Clark's ears I was a little eh that might be a bit much cause maybe he wasn't involved in her death and was trying to get vengeance for her. But yeah no that fucker deserved worse.
