Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
May. 23rd, 2025 11:48 pmI liked it fine.
+ I liked that the kids felt like kids. Their interactions amongst themselves and the ways they reacted to everything happening around them felt real.
+ I liked that the show didn't have the kids running around saving the day, winning against adult forces and generally being kid protagonists in a kids show. Jod or SM-33 had to save them over and over, and yet at the same time they did figure stuff out, they persevered, they found answers and occasionally did advance their cause.
+ They 100% got me with Jod. I did not see him being an actual bad guy coming. I had suspicions as the season got on but he seemed so obviously the dangerous rogue with a hidden heart of gold trope, he was a Force user, he's played by Jude Law! I think the moment that made me go 'oh snap' was when he murdered all those pirates with the acid trap. That was dark and I was like 'um' and then the rest of the episode happened. And then he didn't have a change of heart! So I guess bravo for that.
All that said they definitely didn't make him evil and he could get a later redemption. I think he was genuinely upset about KB's 'death' and didn't want to hurt the kids. He was a lot of threats but little actual hurting of them. He seemed almost upset at the idea that he'd have to kill Fern to get the Captainship from her. He didn't kill SM-33's little rodent friend (and I was 100% worried he was about to.) He obviously has massive trauma and messed up opinions based on the tragedy in his past, and that is ripe for future redemption. Personally I hope he finds himself that way.
+ I loved Wim trying to use the lightsaber and then failing hard at it.
+ A really great scene was KB and Wim in the junkyard, with Wim desperately rushing to save KB's life, and KB carefully trying to guide him in what to do while slowly dying, and them together succeeding in saving her. It was great. (Although I totally thought Fern was going to show up and save KB after realising why she picked a fight.)
+ I liked SM-33. I loved him trying his best, during the confrontation on the ship near the end, to help the kids regain control and then fudging the rules a little to make Fern captain again.
+ Jod exasperatedly herding the group of kids around life and death situations was pretty fun.
+ I liked the few little moments between Jod and Wim, and wish they'd had spent just a little more time building up that relationship. That last moment was great. A part of me really want Jod teaching Wim about the Force.
+ I really liked Neel and Hayna. Their short friendship was really sweet.
+ I'm glad that we didn't get a lot of the parents because I think they would have taken away from the kids family but I did really like them all working together in order to try and show the kids the way home.
+ The kids taking the bench tunnel bobby-trap to escape Jod was so so risky consider how immediate death-like the other traps were.
