Season 20

So I actually did watch the show this season but I just never had anything to say. It wasn't a very engaging season for me. I mean I liked it but I thought it was one of the weaker seasons of the show. That said I did really like the finale.

+ Of the teams left in the final four Rachel/Dave were definitely the team I wanted to win. Certainly they were a massively competitive team that despite their bitching managed to always do really well so I felt like they deserved it. Although I did many times find myself thinking it'd be nice if anyone else won simply because of how many legs and thus prizes they won.

+ My favourite team was by far was Bopper/Mark. They were so sweet and fun. I loved their friendship. I liked how they didn't give up but kept trying and always supported each other.

+ Nary/Jamie were actually probably my second favourite team. They were nice too and again I liked their friendship and supportiveness. I still don't really understand why they lied about their jobs though.

+ Of the in-team bickering I actually found Rachel/Dave the most irritating. For individual people Big Brother Rachel was by far the most annoying but I feel like Brendan didn't engage as much and mainly just tried to be supportive/not get into it with her more/stay calm whereas Rachel/Dave were constantly sniping and she always said something to/about his whining/sulking/bad attitude.

+ Rachel... she was slightly annoying at times in the beginning but by the last couple legs she was just unbearable. Whiny, easy to take offense, her utter lack of patience/determination (the way she would give up and start crying/throw a tantrum as soon as any task wasn't completable the first try and/or took some effort), the complaining, the crying, the constant pessimism... it was never ending. I just wanted to shake her so many times.

It got to the point in the final episodes where I was going "oh my god" and rolling my eyes every time she was on screen. Actually at one point (when they were walking to the helicopters) I ended up saying "oh my god" at the exact same time as Brendan did which caused me to start laughing.

+ Yet despite my near constant annoyance with Rachel I still liked her more than Art/JJ. It's weird. This actually seems especially weird considering we saw them do one of the nicest things someone has done on the race - giving Bopper the $5000 at the end of Leg 4. I had no real opinion of them in the first few legs but then I just started disliking them more and more. Their attitude really rubbed me the wrong way and I found them really unpleasant.

During the final roadblock I was actually cheering for Rachel to get it first (even though neither would win) simply because I really wanted her to beat them. Of course then Rachel went down once, started whining and I immediately wanted her to finish just so she would stop.

+ I was pretty surprised by how friendly Rachel and Rachel were in the final two episodes. I don't remember them being that friendly during the rest of the race. They even hugged when Big Brother Rachel made it to the mat. It seems in some part to be caused by shared dislike for Art/JJ but for whatever reason it started I liked it.

+ I had an idyll thought while watching the first part of the final - I would have loved to have seen the two Rachel's switch places. Blonde Rachel and Brendan would have gotten along well I think and would have been an easy team to root for. Meanwhile red-headed Rachel and Dave would have been such a train-wreck that they might have gone right past the annoyance I kept feeling for both actual teams and straight into fun to watch/gawk at.

+ I never really liked Vanessa/Ralph much, largely because of the stupidity of the feud with Big Brother, but Vanessa did a really good job with the Japanese game show. I was impressed that she completed it.

+ Both the final two non-elimination legs felt wasted because unfortunately both teams were just too far behind to catch up in legs that stayed within the same country. They should have placed them differently.

+ Episode 10 was the most suspenseful for me because I so wanted Bopper & Mark to make it onto the next leg and because of Art/JJ's bad detour choice it seemed as if they might actually have a chance. My favourite team vs my least favourite team. It was the most nail biting part of the season and I was so hopeful that they might actually make it and then - no. Damn.

+ Art/JJ's hate-on for Rachel/Dave after they didn't U-Turn Big Brother was pretty ridiculous.

+ I actually forgot all about Misa/Maiya until were shown at the mat with the other teams. Wow, was their missing the mat at the end of the first Leg one of the most embarrassing losses. I couldn't believe it when it happened and it still makes me shake my head.

+ Rachel/Dave appeared to be trying to top that mistake by skipping the final roadblock in the finale. They are so lucky the other teams didn't have it more together because that really should have been a fatal mistake. I can kind of see how they made it - they had after all already done a roadblock but honestly people read the clue.

Rachel/Brendan failed that even more. The mess up after the ice roadblock was really stupid and easily preventable. And even though Rachel blamed herself for it Brendan wasn't blameless - she read the clue out loud, he has working ears, and you'd have thought one of them would catch it.

Art/JJ just had the worst luck with directions but it was also their own fault by trying to follow someone else's cab to a location. In the final leg! That's totally what killed it for them - well, okay that and Art's complete failure at the second roadblock - and it makes me a little satisfied because I remember them looking down on Big Brother for following people's cabs in the past.
