Loved
• Elena/Caroline/Bonnie. The privacy spell scene was cute and their final scene was perfect. I loved: Caroline being there for Bonnie, Caroline's compassion for Elena and her softness with her, Elena desperately wanting to help and to be there for Bonnie, Caroline's: "Everything that happened tonight was to save you. And that's okay because she loves you. So much.", Elena's acceptance of Bonnie's wishes and her "tell her I love her" and the fact that Bonnie was standing around the corner listening (and crying) the whole time. Oh, girls. I love them.
• Elena/Elijah. They were excellent. I loved how regretful and torn Elena was about Elijah being killed too and that she wanted to find a way to save him. I loved his apology note to her at the end. He'll 'carry his regret always and forever'! I love how likely it is that Elena will have forgiven him by the next time they meet - he was protecting his family so of course she understands.
• Elena. I liked that despite Damon's worry about Elena's compassion getting the best of her it actually didn't. Yes, she did end up telling Elijah the truth but she didn't seek him out to warn him, nor did she tell him when he first asked. It's only when he confronts her with the fact that he knows she's been lying that she spills the beans. It's actually pretty dark of her if you think about. All the others have no real bond with the Originals, in fact they see them reasonably as dangerous and think that their deaths are necessary. Elena, on the other hand, cares for Elijah to some degree, she feels a bond and even a debt towards him, and yet in the end she was going to allow him to die. Because of that I find her actions a lot darker than the others. I love ruthless Elena but I also love compassionate Elena. I'm torn about whether I see this as a good thing or a bad thing.
I loved her getting away from Rebekah twice, the head-butt was great, and the way she basically saved her own life by talking to her captor.
• Elijah. I liked how he was the only one suspicious of Esther and that he kept digging deeper. I liked him ruthlessly using Elena to save his family and his regret over that. I liked his note to Elena. I'm a bit worried about just how guilty he seemed to feel and the fact that he left when he's always only wanted his family back. Hopefully we see him again soon.
• Elijah/Rebekah scene. It was really well done and I liked how he specifically mentioned regret over using Rebekah to get what he wanted. Also this line: “Mother made us vampires. She didn’t make us monsters. We did that to ourselves.”
• “You see? It’s democracy in action.” – Damon. Heh. I always love the OT3 together, in any way, but especially being or acting as if they are a unit.
• Damon/Stefan were great.
• So do Damon's actions mean that he's decided to give up pursuing Elena now? Her rejection of his declaration of love seems to have impacted him hard (of course it did) and it feels like he's now completely given up hope that she will ever want to be with him. By choosing to be the one to turn Abby he was basically conceding the field, so to speak, to Stefan. Hmm.
• "Didn’t you see the way we stood up to Elena? I like you on my team. It must have driven her nuts.” – Damon LOL.
• Caroline/Klaus. I still dislike the idea because Jenna (also: Isobel) but at the same time I do enjoy watching them. I love the way Caroline keeps shutting Klaus down and the way he loves that about her.
"I'm too smart to be seduced by you." – Caroline
"That's why I like you." – Klaus
• Caroline getting to be part of the plan for once was great. Also she looked lovely while talking to Klaus.
• Damon and Stefan turning Abby, instead of killing her and Bonnie as Elijah suggested they needed to do, was very clever and a much better idea.
• Elena telling Alaric about Damon/Rebekah. Hee. Has she just been wandering around ranting about it to everyone?
• The Original Siblings. It’s too bad that they’re mostly scattered now because I love them and the ways they fight and tease each other. They’re delightful.
• Elijah stomping a giant hole in the earth and Rebekah bring out the gasoline when Elena sought shelter in the vampire-proof cave. You don't want to mess with Originals.
• Esther being stone cold-during her confrontation with her sons. We've seen her have twinges of sadness over what she was planning but when faced with them at the moment of truth she was teary-eyed but unwavering. I appreciate that.
Other
• "Fine. Neither one of us gets her." - Damon Yuck. Damon neither you nor Stefan get to decide who Elena is with. She's not an object, you don't 'get' her.
• Damon seemed pretty hurt when Stefan so harshly stated that he didn't deserve Elena. It makes me think that for Damon having Stefan believe that Damon is 'worthy' of Elena might just be as important as Elena's acceptance of him.
• I do not approve of Stefan going back to only drinking animal blood. That’s a step back. Tearing people apart and then reassembling their pieces is bad and he should definitely stop that. And draining random people is also bad. But not drinking human blood only continues to enable his weakness for it. He’s only insuring that his Ripper cycle will continue when he should be using this opportunity to put a stop to it once and for all.
• "Somehow she’s the one who always gets hurt." – Caroline. This is both true and false. It’s misleading. Because Bonnie has gone through a lot, and suffered a lot, this is certainly true and a lot of it is related to Elena and the chaos that surrounds her. BUT – everyone has suffered. Bonnie, Caroline, Elena and basically everyone they know. And it’s not all because of Elena – vampires would still have been an issue even if Elena hadn’t been around. Vampires were a fact of life in Mystic Falls before Elena was even born. All that said Bonnie has had two family members die for reasons connected to Elena so I can understand why she'd need a moment.
• I got spoiled about Matt Davis probably not being on the show after this season (I saw his name on the cast for a new show) and because this was TVD I immediately knew he was killed. But then this episode had me wondering – what if he left? What if the ring stopped working and he fell in love again and she wanted to leave and – he left? But, no, this is TVD so he’s shot by his girlfriend after he discovers she’s a serial killer. Sigh. I feel weirdly unemotional about it. Does he survive, does he die now, does he die later or does he actually leave the town alive? Eh.
• I really wish that after Elena nailed Rebekah’s motivations – anger at being betrayed and used by someone she thought was trying to be her friend – Elena had followed that up by using some of her empathy with Rebekah. I’m really surprised that Elena didn’t even try to explain her side, or what she’d been feeling or even apologised for it. All of those were things I was expecting. But Elena didn’t even try to connect to Rebekah, even though Rebekah was listening and vulnerable right at that minute, and I don’t know that she will get the chance again. Elena is really great at connecting to people – so why not now? I'm still hoping that one day they will be friends.
• The lack of Esther/Rebekah strikes me as strange. Rebekah loves her mother so much, her most prized possession was Esther's necklace and yet we never saw them interact one-on-one. I wish we could have gotten at least one scene between them before the truth of Esther's plan was revealed.
• Esther went to see Bonnie and we didn’t get to see it? Ugh. I did like that Elena’s response of ‘wth, and you let me vent about Damon? Priorities!”
• Why wouldn’t Esther bring the Bennetts into her circle as well if she knew it would be safe within? They’re her power source, she knows that her children want to live... her sending them off was quite stupid.
• “You’re not fooling anyone Damon. You still love her.” - Stefan Um... yes? It’s only been like a day or two since their ball spat and it’s not as if Damon’s been disavowing all feelings for her. I don’t understand why Stefan said this. If anything this sounds far more like something Damon should have said to Stefan.
• You know if Elijah wanted to make it up to Elena maybe he could have stuck around to protect her and her family from his angry siblings?
