Mickey/Rose Thought
Mar. 10th, 2012 05:28 pmWhen I hear this song it makes me think of Mickey and Mickey/Rose. That got me thinking about criticism I've read comparing Mickey/Rose to Amy/Rory. The situations are similar – two people who grew up together and with the guy head over heels in love with the girl but I don't think it is a very good comparison because in an important way they are very different situations.
The difference between Amy/Rory and Rose/Mickey is that Amy was ostensibly in love with Rory, seeing as how she was planning on marrying him, whereas I don’t think Rose ever was in love with Mickey.
I think for Rose she had a bad experience with Jimmy and Mickey was there for her just like he always had been. He wanted romance along with friendship and she went along with it because she was still hurt over Jimmy, because she did love Mickey and because it was comfortable. It was just like their friendship except with kissing. I never felt like she was in love with him.
As soon as Rose met the Doctor their relationship was over though neither knew it. Not because of the Doctor, though he would become a part of it later, but because of what he represented and offered her. The Doctor was the excitement and adventure that Rose wanted more than anything. I think it’s slightly possible that if Mickey had gone with them at the beginning, or when the Doctor offered after episode 5 they might have worked. Maybe.
But anyway, comparing the two relationships doesn’t really work.
Also I agree that Rose treated Mickey badly especially in the first season. But she was very clear several times that they were over and he was the one who refused to let go/accept that. That is not on her. And as far as her continuing to ‘use’ him as a friend, relaying on him and turning to him for comfort – well, it was a bit selfish and inconsiderate but Mickey was Rose’s best friend long before they were a couple, she’s known him all her life and has always counted on him. Was she just supposed to cut him from her life? Maybe it wasn’t fair of her but I don’t think it would have been fair either for her to have to give up her best friend.
