Defiance Thoughts

iariaI watched five episodes of Defiance this weekend. It's not bad. I liked the pilot and one thing that really drew me in where how many female characters there were and the relationships between them. I looked it up and of the cast there are 3 men and 4 women listed as ‘main’ and 3 men and 3 women listed as ‘reoccurring’. That's pretty great.
* I really love the variety in the female characters: Irisa (surly daughter, kickass, alien), Amanda (mayor, uncertain but trying her best), Kenya (madam/proprietor of Need/Want), Stahma [wife, but also cunning schemer], Doc Yewll [no-nonsense doctor], Christie [daughter, currently playing Juliet] and Nicky Riordan [ex-mayor with secrets]
* The relationship between the women has so much interesting potential. The three I'm particularly interested in are:
- Amanda/Nicky – clearly very close, Nicky is Amanda’s beloved mentor, but Nicky has plans and I really want to see where this goes.
- Amanda/Kenya - lovely first scene together, supportive but with tension between them.
- Stahma/Christie - they could be the most interesting of all depending on where it goes. Perhaps with Stahma taking Christie under her wing all the while manipulating and scheming behind the scenes and then Christie slowly realising it and learning to fight back. That's one option.
* I think my biggest worry right now is them continuing with the Kenya/Nolan/Amanda triangle and having the women fight over him, or him ruining their relationship. Ugh.
* It’s kind of sad that I was so surprised when Kenya and Amanda started talking and they were all friendly and supportive and I just really wasn’t expecting it. I was a bit disappointed –it’d be nice to have that friendship without family bonds – but I love sisters too and they clearly respect and love each other.
* I'd like to see more of Tirra and the Tirra/Kenya relationship. The fact that she was going to give Tirra the necklace that was supposedly the last thing her mother gave her was either a) a contrivance used with no character thought to cause Kenya to learn the truth in which case ugh, not impressed or b) implies that Kenya and Tirra are really close and if so I want to see more of that.
* Irisa/Tommy happened really fast and I'm not sure I like it. It felt too fast. That said I do like them so we'll see.
* Stahma is by far the scariest person on the show and possibly my favourite. That story about her betrothed, and how she had him sucked out of an airlock seriously had me wtf?! Based on Christy's reaction I don't think she entire got, or at least didn't really believe, that Stahma was saying she'd killed him.
* I really want more of Doc Yewll. Also the orangutan alien whose name I don't know and has had like one line.
* I like that Alak seems equally as innocent and in love as Christy. Him being in charge of the town radio is a interesting touch.
* I thought it was interesting when they were attacked by the bug Alak fell down and backed away quickly while still down and it was Christy who grabbed the touch to defend them while also back away. He panicked and she acted quickly even though they were equally terrified. It's interesting though when you consider how much cowardice is hated/looked down upon by his people (ie> it requires death). I'm thinking perhaps someone was a little too sheltered.
