I really liked this episode for the most part.
• I really like Dr. Claire Callahan. I had one issue with her but that was more of an issue with the show than the character and I really loved her interactions with Audrey.
- I like that she's completely in the know about the Troubles, is in fact the psychiatrist to most of the Troubled that Audrey has helped in the past. It makes so much sense to me. Like Dwight her role seems so necessary that I'm surprised I didn't consider the need before. After everything they've gone through it makes sense that they'd need someone sympathetic to talk to and possibly even continuing help in controlling their Trouble. I loved her line - "You're on the frontlines, I get 'em when you're done." That worked for me.
• My number one issue with the episode was Claire directing the confrontation in the forest and figuring out how Liam's dad's Trouble worked. This is what Audrey does! That's her whole point in showing up every 25 years - to help the Troubled. She has a connection to them. Last season it would have been Audrey figuring it out and it makes no sense to me to have Claire doing it here. Frankly if I hadn't liked Claire up until that point that may have been enough to make me dislike her.
As it is it leaves me feeling really annoyed at the show/TPTB but at the same time I'm seeing what could be a pattern and I'm wondering if it was on purpose. We've had two episodes now and in both it's been people other than Audrey who have ended up "helping" the Troubled person with their ability while Audrey mostly played support. If there is an actual plan here, a reason for it, that would go a long way to making it less irritating.
Also we get this line from Claire after everything was solved: "You're amazing. I am so glad that I got to see what you do; you absolutely need therapy." This actually doesn't make sense considering how the confrontation played out. Audrey using Cookie to find Liam was a great idea. But 'amazing'? And "seeing what you do" - well what Audrey does is help the Troubled to control their Troubles which Claire did more of than Audrey. Claire figured out the trigger of the dad's Trouble and how to end it. So what Claire was 'seeing' Audrey do wasn't that impressive outside regular cop work. Whereas if Claire hadn't been given Audrey's normal role this episode (why? why?!) Claire getting to see Audrey actually solve the situation and help a Troubled it would make absolute sense for her to be so impressed.
Ugh, this bothers me so much!
• Okay, I lied - Claire's bit at the end that Audrey should address her relationship with Nathan annoyed me. That is something very personal that having known them for only a day she doesn't really have any place commenting on. Even if she's heard all about them via her patients/gossip it's still not something she should have brought up.
• I love that Audrey told Duke everything. I loved the two of them sharing coffee and hanging out being friends, working on the mystery that is Audrey's existence. Also love that she answered his call immediately.
• Duke was awesome. He was just completely wonderful the entire episode. I ♥ him.
- I loved Duke's absolutely sure "no, never" to the idea of him being the hunter.
- His line about girl talk was great and I loved how he said this line: "Yeah, we're friends. Is that a problem?"
- I loved him immediately delegating the feral naked guy problem to Dwight. Hee.
- I love that how much Duke's trying to protect Audrey. From changing her locks, to moving towards the unknown person at the Gull, to his instinctive pushing her out of the way at Dwight's car even as it put him in harms way, to being so determined to find out who the Hunter was and telling her when he did. He tells Nathan at the beginning that he's "gonna actually do something to help Audrey" and then he backed it up with action.
• Nathan however is still being needless hostile and a jackass to Duke. "Well, I guess we won't know 'til you kill somebody." Seriously, Nathan? Is his tattoo affecting his mind or something?
• Plus! "Stay away from her. WTF? So just jackassy in general. What the hell gives him the right to decide who Audrey can be friends with? That's not his decision even if he was right about Duke. Man, that pissed me off. I did love Duke's immediate "no" in response.
• Audrey seemed really subdued in her opening scene. Duke was directing the conversation, then when they heard someone coming she let Duke move to protect her, staying back (also if she felt unsafe even at home you'd think that she'd always have her gun on her) and then she didn't get involved in the Nathan/Duke sniping, nor did she defend Duke.
• I loved that Audrey's reaction when they first got to the store was one of empathy and sympathy. The way she said "I think he's cold" made me aww at her.
• Audrey giving up Cookie because she believes that she will share the same fate as Lucy and Sarah and disappear in two months was really sad. It's as if she's already given up the fight.
• I was super not happy with the dead dog. That was completely unnecessary to the story. As was how exactly it was presented. The gore was gratuitous. Where did he even come from and why did the other dogs kill him? It doesn't make sense, wasn't needed and just... ugh.
