After all the angst of IRIS it was nice to get back to the fun of this series. I’d actually forgotten how much I enjoy it.
• I loved all the Dal Ja/Seon Joo’s interactions. I think this was the biggest episode yet as far as their relationship goes. I love so much that they have become friends and I really do think they qualify as that now. I loved that it was Seon Joo who reached out to Dal Ja when she was caught crying. That she reached out first and then opened up to Dal Ja without any prompting was huge. I loved them talking and sharing a drink and a toast to a better future. That was her major step – to open herself up. I think Dal Ja also had a major step in that scene – when she realised that Seon Joo was person and just like her. Seon Joo moved from ‘other’ to someone Dal Ja could identify with. I loved them each defending the other to Ms. Kang – Seon Joo when she confronted Ms. Kang as she was in the middle of scolding Dal Ja and then Dal Ja when she confronted Ms. Kang about her prejudice towards Seon Joo. I loved that when she was scared and in trouble Seon Joo called Dal Ja – and Dal Ja rushed over and immediately took up the position of barrier/guardian between Seon Joo and everyone else. She confronted the men in her apartment, she even intervened when she thought Tae Bong was being too pushy, she made her tea and stayed by her side.
My favourite scene was their last one. When Seon Joo called Sae Do from her bed she seemed so weary and drained and alone, and I was feeling very sorry for her. So when Dal Ja told Tae Bong that “If I leave, Seon Joo will be lonely” and for the next scene of Seon Joo to be with her in bed with Dal Ja lying next to her – it just made me happy. The best part was Dal Ja reaching out and taking her hand and the voice over about how anxious Dal Ja was that she would be pushed away but she wasn’t and how that ‘lifted a brick from her heart’. ♥ It made me go ‘awwww’ so much.
• I loved the first cut/credit piece of art for this episode. It’s Dal Ja sitting on one side of a brick wall holding out her hand to a cautious looked Seon Joo as she climbs through it.
• Dal Ja/Tae Bong continue to be adorable. I just love how much he adores her already. Even when she’s pushing him away or being rude he finds her endearing and cute. I liked his response to her asking why he’s acting the way he is towards her (“One... for world peace. Two... To conquer that universe. Three.. I’m attracted to you.” – Hee. Snarky and amused; I liked it). I loved their talk/fight where Dal Ja ends up trying to give the money back to him and he blows up at her because ‘if he took back the money then all of their future relationship will always be about the money’. That makes so much sense. I loved how he immediately and sincerely apologised for yelling at her and then asked her for her help while he worked to make enough money to move out. That whole scene was just wonderful. And how fabulous is it to have a lead male who apologises for yelling like that? So fabulous and welcome.
• Tae Bong going to her family to try and woo them to his side and ending up with a job at her mom’s Bento restaurant was enjoyable to watch. I did feel like he laid it on a little thick when he was complimenting Dal Ja’s mom and figured he was saying that he’d always wanted to own a Bento restaurant just to get in better with her. But then he seemed pretty enthusiastic about it with Dal Ja, so I don’t know now. One thing I definitely didn’t know was that Tae Bong is a lawyer who was actually practicing a year ago! Did we know this? I don’t remember it.
• “Capability, safety, warmth, security... I like men with those traits.” – Dal Ja. That was nice of her to lay out exactly what he needs to do to win her over. I think he already has and gives her all those things all ready though.
• I continue to love the Dal Ja/Sae Do friendship. I love that she went to him for advice. And I was very amused, and kind of pleased actually, that he was so delighted with the idea that she’d finally lost her virginity.
• Ki Joong talking things over with his assistant every time he left Dal Ja amused me but I really just want to sit him down and say ‘she’s just not that into you’. I don’t think I’ve come across a heroine less interested in the secondary male – wait, no that’s a lie because Seung Hee never even considered Sa Woo on IRIS but that feels like an entire different type of show – so with regards to romantic dramas this feels different. I think it’s less because of Dal Ja’s lack of romantic interest in his anymore but the fact that they not even really friends whereas in the other romances I’ve watched the secondary guy becomes a really close friend/confidant of the heroine even as she doesn’t love him back. But in this series Tae Bong is both the male part of the OTP and the heroine’s confidant/friend. Huh. No wonder I like him so much. This show keeps doing things its own way and surprising me.
• I did find myself feeling very sorry for Ki Joong throughout the episode though. He clearly likes her, his crazy wife ruins things and now no matter how he tries he can’t seem to get back what they had before (which isn’t as much as he probably thought but he doesn’t know that). He just seems so earnest and genuine in his like for her and so awkward and lonely. I hope he doesn’t end the series alone. I’m still a bit mad at him about not telling Dal Ja about his wife and his lack of response to her going crazy all over Dal Ja but it’s been awhile since I watched an episode and mostly I’m feeling sorry for him because it is never going to happen.
