• At this point I actually really like that TPTB take basic descriptions of an episode – Sunako goes on an omiai – and then gives it their own entirely different spin on it. I liked the twist of Sunako’s omiai being a rich old guy, causing everyone to freak, and then the reveal that he was into torture devices as well causing Sunako to get along great with him. It was a neat twist on what I was expecting. For most of the episode I enjoyed this new spin on the story only then Kyohei discovered that Kurume was kinky and then there was Kurume losing it in the church and then Sunako/Kyohei teaming up to take out his numerous guards and it all just became too ridiculous for me. They did win me back with the end. I liked that Kurume wasn’t just left as a creepy/perverted old guy but given understandable motive – loneliness and always being rejected – and I liked that Mine didn’t react to him in disgust because of his hobby but because he was a liar.
• Mine actually got a couple lines that I liked including “The reason why you get rejected isn’t because of your hobby. You are supposed to show who you are and face your partner straight forwardly... that’s love. ... You have to love yourself first.” and “For Sunako-chan whether through the omiai or not, I want her to experience the beauty of loving someone.” I love that she loves Sunako like a daughter, and that her wanting Sunako to ‘be a lady’ actually has nothing to do with wanted to change who Sunako is or out of some sort of gender stereotyping. She just wants her to be happy. We go some nice back story on Mine, and the part with her husband and his memory in particular was moving, and I found it interesting that it seems like Mine and her husband basically raised Sunako. They were all adorable.
• Sunako being 21 in this series really surprised me though it does explain why she doesn’t go to school with the guys. I’m curious about why the PTB chose to make her four years older than the guys.
• Kyohei, emotionally, got a huge work out this episode. He was emoting everywhere. We had his expression when Sunako confessed that her ‘disappointing auntie makes me hate myself so I’m doing anything for her’ and his hugging her and calling her awesome. I think his expression and then the spontaneous hug were showing his true feelings. He was moved by what she said. And then he covered it by making it about the free rent, and while I think that was also true, I think he was using it as a cover for an unexpected welling of emotion towards her. He had a lot of those this episode. My favourite moment was after Sunako reveals that she didn’t plan on marrying Kurume at all nor did she love him (via cooking French food for him) and Kyohei turns his head away (even though she is facing away) and gets this pleased/relieved grin. He is just so pleased. I loved it. So of course he has to cover it by turning to something far less important.
• I love Noi turning up to poke at Kyohei at lunch. I love what we’ve seen of their relationship. To me they really come off as a brother/sister pair who love annoying the crap out of each other. I hope we get some background on their friendship. That said we aren’t getting enough Noi and I’m getting disgruntled! Why hasn’t she been in more episodes? Her unnamed relationship with Takenaga gets hints but we haven’t really seen anything about them. More importantly however is the complete lack of Noi and Sunako’s friendship. What the hell show? Not cool!
• I loved Ranmaru, Yuki and Noi teaming up to trap Kyohei and Sunako together, and that Takenaga, as usual, stayed apart watching their crazy antics and rolling his eyes. I liked how the whole scene played out.
• I wrote this part way through the episode but I’m going to keep it: “I feel sorry for the poor omiai guy – here he finally meets the perfect woman – she’s young, pretty, she not only tolerates his interests in horrifying/scary stuff but revels in it with him, she’s an excellent cook, she cares enough to purposefully learn to make the food he loves, she understands his feelings and his insecurities. She is seriously his perfect match in so many ways. And he seems like this nice old man. So when this all ends not in marriage I’m going to feel bad for him. When he jumped into the hole with her it made me go awww and then they were all cute in there. And he made her laugh! They’re just really comfortable together and it’s nice to see.” ... So clearly it all didn’t play out how I was imagining but you know I don’t think the BDSM games would have been a deal breaker for Sunako. Hmm.
• I like that Kyohei was taken aback by what Kurume was doing, I think anyone would be, but that he also reacted in a rather ‘whatever floats your boat’ way about it.
• I can’t remember if I mentioned it but from the first episode when Shinichi was introduced I found myself wondering if he was meant to be a love interest for Mine. This episode pretty much confirms that to me. If they aren’t a happy couple by the final episode I would be very surprised. I mean they clearly know each other and have for awhile, he is so completely enamoured with her, and all the talk of rich/powerful men and her jetting around works well with her picking a poor man right at home.
• Sunako being afraid of something scary in the dark was weird and so OOC. It was like they forgot for a minute that Sunako isn’t a ‘normal stereotypical girl’.
• I also found everyone sitting down to dinner except Sunako very weird. Yes, it’s what she does all the time but this is her omiai! Plus – she’s back into her usual outfit and they’re all back at the mansion? What?
• I found myself go ‘uh, what’ when we suddenly cut to Sunako standing at the altar doing her own ‘um, what’. Does that mean that in getting dressed, going to the church and walking down the aisle Sunako didn’t ask what the hell was going on? That’s a bit hard for me to believe.
• How did Kyohei manage to come upon Kurume being kinky without any of his hundred guards stopping him?
