The Female of the Species
I loved the end. So, so much love. I wasn't expecting it at all. I can't wait to see where the show is going to go from here.
+ Moriarty's letter to Joan was so fabulous. I have to break it down into parts:
"my dearest Watson, although it's been far too long since we laid eyes on each other" ... first though: is this a love letter? Because this is really sounding like a love letter.
"...and more than a bit unhappy to learn that his death was an attempt on your own most cherished life" ... definitely a love letter. I have a feeling that 'a bit unhappy' was a bit of an understatement. Also I love that Moriarty has been keeping track of them because of course she has. I wonder what she thought of their break-up?
"I still believe that there is a game unfolding between Sherlock and I and you have made yourself a valued and essential contributor." I love just how genuinely impressed Moriarty is with Joan. So Sherlock/Moriarty/Joan, yes?
"I won't have you removed from play prematurely. Uninvited participants are not welcome at the table and their intrusions will be dealt with accordingly" I love Moriarty being possessive of Joan(/Sherlock) and taking out any other who tries to harm them. It is hitting so many of the beloved enemy tropes and I am all over that. I also love that Moriarty had Elana killed by, presumably, hemlock.
"There may well be more rounds to be played between the two of us and until such time that we are both free to engage I remain in delighted anticipation." I can't even with this. 'delighted anticipation', really Moriarty? And she makes this last part specifically about her and Joan and their relationship (separate from Sherlock.) Her thing with Joan isn't just a reflection of her thing with Sherlock.
+ Sherlock/Joan were really lovely. I loved Sherlock taking care of Joan while she tried to deal. I love how undemandingly supportive he is of her. I loved the scene where she woke him abruptly and her joy at turning the tables. That was delightful. I loved Sherlock telling Joan - "It isn't my world. It's our world."
+ Even though I think Joan is returning to the brownstone for the wrong reasons and it's not at all the happy occasion I wanted I'm still happy that she's moving back in.
+ Sherlock and Bell's team-up was nice. I loved their final scene and Sherlock finally calling him Marcus.
+ I wasn't super happy with Andrew's death, though I wasn't particularly attached to him as a character, but the way the story ended up playing out with Moriarty's involvement was awesome so I'll get over it. Elana dying also felt a bit wasted - there is a lot more they could have done with Joan having her own nemesis especially with things being so personal - but again I'm not super attached to the character and I really do love Moriary taking out her competition so to speak, so it ended up working for me.
+ I think it would have worked better to have seen Elana poisoned and die than just seeing her body afterwards.
