The Major (No. 75)

A bit boring to be honest though as always Red was great.

• The final Red/Dembe scene was wonderful. The best scene of the episode. I've been waiting all season for more of their relationship and it's just sad that in this one short scene we heard Dembe speak more than he has all season. I really love all the glimpses we've gotten about how close Red and Dembe are and I wish the show would explore it more or even just let us see it like they did here. More Dembe!

- I liked Dembe telling Red a truth he doesn't want to hear and pushing him. I like what it says about the trust between them. I liked that Dembe seemed to be speaking up for Liz. I don't know how much of his concern is for her and how much it's about him not wanting to see it all blow up in Red's face but I liked it all the same.

• Liz blowing up at Judge Denner and going into a rant about how 'of course she should have known about everything, she sucks!' was great. I also enjoyed the stenographer's reaction.

• Red hired Tom to watch over Liz. Hmmm. I honestly don't think this retcon works. The idea I like well enough. Considering how important Liz is to Red I can see him putting someone to watch over her especially with Berlin and his vendetta ramping up but in practice I really don't think it works with what we saw in season one. But that's mostly just a feeling because I'm having a hard time remembering the details of season one. It does make me want to re-watch especially scenes like the hospital one.

- So was Tom supposed to stay in the background, become Liz's friend, marry her? Where did things change from Red's employ to Berlin's? Because that's really going to determine just how much he betrayed her. I can't see him telling or encouraging Tom to get romantically involved with her and based on his conversation with the Major it seems emotional involvement on Tom's part wasn't part of the plan. I really hope so in any case because that crosses a line. I wonder if Tom took Berlin's offer so that he could be with Liz/protect her because he'd developed feelings for her while watching over her for Red? When did Tom's allegiance switch and when did Red find out? This is just like The Blacklist - it finally gives you an answer but it just leads to a dozen more questions.

- I'm surprised that when Tom turned on him Red didn't have him killed. Or The Major. Red does not take generally take betrayal very well.

- I'm also surprised that Red turned to an outsider to do something so important for him (watching the, likely, most important thing in his life) instead of using one of his own trusted people. That didn't make much sense to me. I'm having a hard time buying Red doing that. Unless he thought it would attract too much attention to her to use his people? I guess that works.

• Cooper lying for Liz was great. It's not great for him but I love the team having each others backs even in extremes.

• Why the hell did Liz lie to Denner about Tom and what happened on the ship? Considering that she told him absolutely everything about the task force, including about the Fulcrum (!!), I don't understand why she'd lie about this. Which - she told him (and the stenographer) everything, WTH? Is she even allowed to do that? I really don't think she needed to be that forthcoming. He didn't need to know most of that stuff. He doesn't have security clearance for any of that. Also why the hell was there even a stenographer in there? This is top top secret information! They do not want a paper record of it. Extraneous people are not needed. None of it made any sense.

Anyway... Liz lying also made no sense. Especially since the truth is so simple (especially compared to everything else) - she was keeping Tom prisoner to learn more about their enemy Berlin (who had killed one of their own and had Cooper's throat slit), Tom killed the Harbormaster and she tried to stop him. Voila. This is dumb.
