Best Laid Plans
Huh. That was... something that happened.
I honestly have no idea what I think about the Snow/Charming revelations in this episode. It's left me feeling very meh. They certainly went darker than I was expecting! I really don't understand the character choices made here; both in the past and with David in the current timeline.
I think the biggest issue is really this whole 'villain vs heroes' idea the show has decided to push this season where some people are just born/meant to be evil. That the universe itself is against villains. That they can't find happy endings/win because there's a force working against them. It goes against everything we have seen before on this show. This is exactly why I was feeling wary about the whole book/author search this ark. People become evil through their choices and they can choose to be good as well. By making it about 'Fate' and something inherent in the person they're undermining their own show.
Snow and Charming stealing Maleficent's egg to put all of Emma's potential evil in it was so wrong no matter how you look at it. I don't understand how they got to that point even after watching the episode. Not based on everything we've seen about them in the previous 3 seasons. Them realising it at the last moment, suffering over it afterwards and then making a vow to be 'the best versions of themselves' is something. Perhaps the show is trying to show that evil really is a choice, something that even good people can do, and that even after doing something evil you can still chose to be good, to be kind and become heroes?
I don't know.
Good
+ The Rumplestiltskin/Maleficent scene was wonderful. If anyone could empathise with Maleficent's grief it's Rumple who lost his son twice.
+ I love the reveal that Maleficent's child is Emma's friend Lily. I loved Lily and Emma's friendship with her so I'm glad that we're going to see her again.
+ I liked the explanation about who the Author is and his purpose. So how does August know all this anyhow? Is he perhaps the current Author?
+ Regina/Henry were great. I love her protectiveness and their silent communication at the mansion. The hug was lovely.
+ "No one goes near Henry but me. You have a problem with that you can take it up with one of my fireballs." - Regina. Love.
+ I loved Emma casually using her magic to create another page.
+ "No one, not Rumpelstiltskin or some author, gets to decide who I am." - Emma. ♥
+ I wonder if Rumple could use the authur to bring back Neal? If that was his plan all along it would actually make perfect character sense to me.
Meh
+ Wait, so if Snow/Charming had all of Emma's potential 'evil' put into Lily how exactly could she be the person with the biggest potential for evil?
+ Still a weird lack of Emma/Henry. The had a couple little interactions but nothing much.
+ The completely lack of Regina/Maleficent is disappointing.
+ Hook's jealousy over August was meh.
+ "Do what's necessary to convince the boy." Geez, he's his grandson! I really wish this show had developed the Henry/Rumple relationship more (and better). Sigh.
+ Why exactly didn't Ursula and Cruela age while in our world? It's been over 30 years and they look exactly the same!
