Chuck 4x09 ‘Chuck Verses Phase Three’

I really liked this episode overall.

• Things I liked:

- Sarah being BAMFy and crazy was excellent.

- Sarah/Casey as partners again made me very happy.

- I loved the Sarah/Casey face off and Morgan stepping between them.

- Morgan being competent and helpful was nice

- Elli/Awesome being in the episode was great.

• I did have some nitpicks:

- The gender stuff felt weird to me and I kept going between confused and liking stuff.

- Awesome calling Jeffster instead of Morgan made no sense to me. He knows that the laptop was Ellie’s spy father’s and thus it probably has something to do with the spy world. Morgan is both a techie and in the spy world and is the obvious choice.

- I really want after affects on Chuck’s almost lobotomy. I mean the guy said it was almost complete and then just having Sarah there is enough to completely reverse the affects makes no sense. Sarah literally kissing it better really irritates me. For a moment I actually thought the show might go there – have Chuck’s memories wiped – and thought it would be very interesting (though eventually they’d have to find a way to bring him back). I find myself very sceptical about Chuck getting out of that lobotomy with no effects and if that’s how the show plays it in future episodes I will be disappointed.

Hellcats 1x10 ‘Pledging My Love’

This episode left me feeling very annoyed and angry more than anything. I didn’t really enjoy it. There were some small things I liked but, yeah, mostly aggravated.

• The Alice storyline was by far the most frustrating and aggravating part of the episode. Vanessa in particular came off looking really bad in my eyes. Her shaming of Alice made me go ‘argg’ a lot. Vanessa had a point that the photos could affect her future, and them being sent out certainly wasn’t something to laugh about either, but Vanessa approached the situation in a way that was just so wrong. Instead of being sympathetic and compassionate she was judgemental and shaming. Instead of anger at who did this she was irritated and angry towards Alice. Those photos being sent out happened to Alice and were not her fault. She was the victim here. Vanessa calling it ‘self-destructive’ of Alice to send naked pictures of herself to her boyfriend is so ridiculous. Maybe if Alice had sent the pictures out to everyone I could buy ‘self-destructive’ but not how it played out.

At the end Vanessa states “First, you take responsibility for what happened to you. You took those photos and you sent them to Jake.” and Alice looks shamed into agreement and I feel like the audience is supposed to be siding with Vanessa here but instead it just left me enraged. Sending naked photos to your SO might be a bit dumb (it’s not very secure as shown) but it’s not wrong as Vanessa seems to be implying here. In fact her whole ‘take responsibility’ schtick reminded me a lot of people who react to rape victims by saying they have to take responsibility for their part (wearing revealing clothes, getting drunk, going off alone with a guy) and it just makes me so furious.

- I was also really annoyed with Vanessa when she was explaining the situation to Red and she stated “Alice just laughed it off.” Um, no she didn’t. I mean was she even in the same meeting that I watched? Because that is not what I saw happen. What happened was Vanessa was judgmental and confrontational instead of understanding and supportive, and placed blame for the situation on Alice. And then Alice tried to hide her hurt and pain, very badly, by pretending it didn’t bother her. Doesn’t Vanessa’s role as their coach imply that she should be better at counselling them?

• I didn’t love Alice’s payback completely. She signed Damian up for classes in the next semester (related to women and ethics) and to be a nude model for an art class which I did like. But I don’t think it was at all equal with what he did to her. I was expecting her to use her new knowledge to force him to confess to the crime. I did love that she got her own back, that she got control back and if she’s satisfied and happy with what she got then okay then. But I don’t think it’s enough.

• I’m glad that Lewis and Jake were there for Alice and supported her every step of the way but I really wanted more Hellcat support. Savannah stated that they were behind her and then nothing really. We got Marti, with a couple hanger-ons watching, for a short scene but I wanted more. I wanted the girls, the team, rallying around her to help and I don’t feel like we got that. I did love getting to meet Darwin and that he had her back. I hope we see more of him.

• I like the team working together with Derrick on Vanessa’s proposal. That was very nice. But seriously where was that team support for Alice in her time of need?

“A girl like Savannah doesn’t come along often.” – Derrick This rubbed me the wrong way. First, the implication that Savannah is so much better than most girls which is annoying, and second... there’s this implication that Dan should be staying with her specifically because she’s a nice girl and with nothing about his feelings for her being just as important. I think the latter is more important than the former.

“You reminded me of myself.” – Julian. The Marti and Julian stuff this episode was okay but so boring and expected.

• Dan/Marti continues to make me pretty bleh. But I really liked that Dan broke up with Savannah and how he did it. That was definitely the right choice.
