iariaSo apparently TPTB are not going to renew Stana Katic and Tamala Jones's contracts. Now Lanie doesn't surprise me that much - Lanie is a secondary character who has barely been in this season. I'd be sad to see her go but at the end of the day it isn't that big a deal. But they're getting rid of Stana/Kate??? WTF?! I honestly have no idea what the hell they're thinking. You can't just get rid of your female lead! She's one half of the main duo and the show romance, how the hell are they going to explain her absence in any satisfactory way? The two of them are happily married! Why do they think getting rid of her could work in any way?
What is it with showrunners thinking that they can keep the show going without their female lead this season? First Abbie, now Kate. Abbie wasn't their fault in so far as the actress wanted to leave (but is because they apparently treated her horribly) but the article I read stated that Stana is being let go to save money? Which just makes me think of Criminal Minds and how CBS decided to try and save money by getting rid of two of their three female cast members which rightfully blew up in their face. It makes me so mad that so many people in charge apparently think female leads aren't really that important/don't matter/are replaceable.
That said I would 100% be behind the show switching focus and following Alexis Castle and Hayley being awesome private detectives together. Rick and Kate could leave for reasons and Alexis and Hayley could continue to run the business - perhaps changing up the format a bit to give more non-murder based cases focus but still keeping them working on the occasional one with Ryan and Espo. Also they could fall in love. Because they are amazing together. Now that I've considered the possibility I really want this show!
8x18 was a very enjoyable episode in large part because of how great Hayley is and how wonderful Hayley and Alexis are together. They are the best thing about this season for me and I am shipping the crap out of them. I loved the scene at Hayley's appartment - Alexis feels comfortable just letting herself in, she knows Hayley well enough to know that she's going to run - and I loved that Alexis refused to let her just leave and in response Hayley went against her deepest instincts and decided to stay and fight back. I loved Hayley calling them her family to her former partner. I loved Alexis telling her she'll never be alone again and hugging her at the end. ♥ I love them so much.
